Sorry.<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Progress included knowing which jokes were still too close.<\/p>\n<p>That evening we met for dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah brought a small envelope.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at it suspiciously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a receipt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She slid it across.<\/p>\n<p>A bank cashier\u2019s check receipt.<\/p>\n<p>Six hundred dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Her remaining unexplained cash.<\/p>\n<p>Donated to North Creek Community Trust.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy show me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I realized I was keeping cash at home out of old habit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo it wasn\u2019t hidden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why get rid of it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I don\u2019t want emergency escape money anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the receipt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s symbolic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSymbols can become manipulation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not just put it in savings?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I wanted to do one dramatic thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gave the receipt back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe receipt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Dinner continued.<\/p>\n<p>Halfway through, I realized something.<\/p>\n<p>For years Sarah had hidden contingency plans because she believed survival required always having another door.<\/p>\n<p>Another identity.<\/p>\n<p>Another account.<\/p>\n<p>Another exit.<\/p>\n<p>Now she was choosing to stay in a life with visible doors.<\/p>\n<p>That did not guarantee she would never leave.<\/p>\n<p>It meant leaving would be an ordinary choice, not disappearance.<\/p>\n<p>After dinner we walked through cold air toward my apartment.<\/p>\n<p>At the entrance, Sarah stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I stay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time neither of us discussed the couch.<\/p>\n<p>We went upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>And for the first time since before Route 35, Sarah spent the night beside me without a hidden plan between us that either of us knew about.<\/p>\n<p>I could not prove there were no secrets.<\/p>\n<p>That was the point.<\/p>\n<p>Trust was not proof.<\/p>\n<p>It was what remained after proof had reached its limit.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=29813\">Click here to continue reading: PART 30: Sarah Finally Returned to Route 35 With Me, Where the Ordinary Shoulder of a Highway Forced Us to Face Our Marriage\u2019s Beginning Again<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sarah and I did not decide to become a couple again.
