to.”

“Even if a court says some portion is legally yours.”

“No.”

“Good.”

“Why?”

“Because then Marcus would be right about one thing.”

“What?”

“That eventually everyone has a price.”

I looked at her.

“I think Marcus was wrong about more than one thing.”

Sarah’s eyes held mine.

“Yes.”

I left.

Outside, Reynolds waited near the corridor.

“Ready?”

“For what?”

“Ward’s key review.”

Another room.

Another piece of evidence.

But this time I did not feel pulled.

I felt involved by choice.

That difference mattered.

The physical Ward key was opened under court authority.

Inside were original ledgers.

Handwritten notes.

Transfer authorizations.

And one document nobody expected.

A letter from Elena Ward to Sarah.

Dated six years before the traffic stop.

Reynolds read the first line aloud.

You need to decide whether the husband is an asset or a liability.

My stomach tightened.

Sarah read over his shoulder.

Ward continued:

If he is an asset, keep him ignorant.

If he is a liability, leave him before he becomes leverage.

Never make the mistake of believing you can keep both him and this work.

I looked at Sarah.

“What did you answer?”

“I didn’t.”

“There’s no response?”

“Not written.”

“What did you do?”

She gave a sad smile.

“Exactly the mistake she warned me about.”

Keep both.

For years.

Until both became impossible.

The final page in Ward’s ledger contained another handwritten note.

Not Sarah’s.

Not Ward’s.

Marcus’s.

He had apparently seen the ledger once long ago.

One sentence.

SHE WILL CHOOSE HIM.

Underneath, in Ward’s handwriting:

THEN YOU WILL LOSE HER.

I stared at those two lines.

Marcus had known.

Ward had known.

Sarah had not yet admitted it.

Everyone around us understood the direction before we did.

The tragedy was not that Sarah eventually chose me.

It was how long she waited to choose honestly.

And how much damage happened before she did.

Click here to continue reading: PART 25: Ward’s Old Letter Exposed the Choice Sarah Refused to Make, but
