PETER RECOVERED BOTH BEFORE DISAPPEARING.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The keys predated Mallory\u2019s disappearance.<\/p>\n<p>He had taken them from the conspiracy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecovered from where?\u201d Reyes asked.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel scanned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo detail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur thought.<\/p>\n<p>If Evelyn once possessed the first token, she knew what the system opened.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Benton did too.<\/p>\n<p>Lily whispered, \u201cThen she doesn\u2019t need anyone to explain it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Exactly.<\/p>\n<p>If Evelyn got the second token now, she could go directly to whatever Peter protected.<\/p>\n<p>Then Rachel stopped reading.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s one more line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRead it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s voice lowered.<\/p>\n<p>IF BOTH TOKENS ARE REUNITED, THE ORIGINAL ARCHIVE CAN BE DESTROYED AS EASILY AS IT CAN BE OPENED.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stood.<\/p>\n<p>That was why Margaret warned against bringing them together.<\/p>\n<p>The two keys did not merely grant access.<\/p>\n<p>They granted control.<\/p>\n<p>Keene had one.<\/p>\n<p>Federal agents had the other.<\/p>\n<p>And three different factions were now moving.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes said, \u201cThe second token gets transferred immediately to an isolated evidence location.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur agreed.<\/p>\n<p>Then Claire\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>She answered.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression went blank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily asked.<\/p>\n<p>Claire held up one finger.<\/p>\n<p>Then looked at Arthur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s Thomas Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalling you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire put the call on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Mercer sounded exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMs. Morgan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is Claire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to speak to Lily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Claire said, \u201cYou can speak while I\u2019m present.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then Thomas said, \u201cLily, if you can hear me, I\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor taking the package.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Evelyn told me to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked at Reyes\u2019s image on the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said it was family property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know what was inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy run?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas began breathing harder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause an hour before the agents arrived, Evelyn called me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said Richard had ruined everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me Keene had the first token and federal agents would soon have the second.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur felt dread.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said Vance was cutting them loose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reyes said sharply, \u201cWhere are you now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas ignored her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLily, listen to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m listening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother-in-law is not trying to protect Richard anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily whispered, \u201cThen what is she doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s going after Keene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur felt every piece align.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn knew how the archive worked.<\/p>\n<p>Keene had token one.<\/p>\n<p>Federal custody had token two.<\/p>\n<p>If Evelyn reached Keene first, she could take the token.<\/p>\n<p>Then she would need only one more theft.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas said, \u201cAnd if she gets both, she\u2019s going to destroy the ledger before Malcolm Vance can trade it for immunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The factions had finally broken apart.<\/p>\n<p>The conspiracy that had survived nineteen years through mutual protection was beginning to consume itself.<\/p>\n<p>And the only thing standing between them and the destruction of the original archive was a brass token small enough to disappear into someone\u2019s pocket.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=29801\">Click here to continue reading: PART 17: Evelyn Made Her Move Against Keene Before Federal Agents Could Reach Him, but the First Token Was No Longer in His Pocket<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thomas Mercer arrived at his office before sunrise.
