I\u2019m not deciding who gets to rewrite this again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t an option.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think federal agents can take the building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you don\u2019t know what Sarah changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Behind me, Sarah\u2019s eyes widened.<\/p>\n<p>I was bluffing.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus didn\u2019t know that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she change?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in every conversation, Marcus sounded uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds understood immediately.<\/p>\n<p>He signaled the tactical team.<\/p>\n<p>Move.<\/p>\n<p>The warehouse raid began.<\/p>\n<p>I heard nothing directly.<\/p>\n<p>Only voices in my room.<\/p>\n<p>Positions.<\/p>\n<p>Entry.<\/p>\n<p>Movement.<\/p>\n<p>Then Marcus realized.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re stalling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice turned cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always were slower than Sarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill here, though.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A gunshot sounded through the phone.<\/p>\n<p>I froze.<\/p>\n<p>Another.<\/p>\n<p>Ward shouted.<\/p>\n<p>Ross screamed.<\/p>\n<p>The line dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds\u2019s radio erupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShots fired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody knew.<\/p>\n<p>Ten seconds stretched into thirty.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWard secured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoss secured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s Vale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Static.<\/p>\n<p>Movement.<\/p>\n<p>Then a voice:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRear exit breached.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus was running.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Tactical agents pursued through vineyard rows.<\/p>\n<p>Night vision captured him crossing irrigation ditches.<\/p>\n<p>A vehicle waited near a dirt road.<\/p>\n<p>He reached it.<\/p>\n<p>Then headlights appeared from the opposite direction.<\/p>\n<p>Another car blocked the road.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stopped.<\/p>\n<p>A figure stepped out.<\/p>\n<p>For one moment everyone assumed law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Officer Martinez.<\/p>\n<p>Retired.<\/p>\n<p>Unarmed.<\/p>\n<p>Standing in the road.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus raised a gun.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds shouted into the radio.<\/p>\n<p>Agents converged.<\/p>\n<p>Martinez did not move.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>That hesitation was enough.<\/p>\n<p>A tactical officer struck him from the side.<\/p>\n<p>Gun fell.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus went down.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in more than a decade, Marcus Vale was in custody.<\/p>\n<p>Alive.<\/p>\n<p>Ross had been shot in the shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Ward was uninjured.<\/p>\n<p>Martinez was furious anyone had followed him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe contacted me,\u201d Martinez later said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted the original note.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one you gave me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said it proved the husband knew before the investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I destroyed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did he know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t.
