Something personal about Sarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I called Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>She listened.<\/p>\n<p>Then smiled without amusement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what Elena asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was Sarah\u2019s first stolen amount?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow would Marcus know that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wouldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah\u2019s face went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForty thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe beginning of Harbor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe beginning of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She explained.<\/p>\n<p>Years before we met, before shell companies and alternate identities, Sarah had been a junior finance employee at a logistics firm secretly controlled by one of Ward\u2019s companies.<\/p>\n<p>She discovered a dormant account.<\/p>\n<p>Forty thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>She moved it.<\/p>\n<p>Not for survival.<\/p>\n<p>Not coercion.<\/p>\n<p>Not love.<\/p>\n<p>Because she believed she could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was your first crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Elena knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot the exact amount.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Ward knew the man at the cemetery didn\u2019t possess all Sarah\u2019s information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeaning he couldn\u2019t authenticate Harbor completely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The myth of Marcus\u2019s control cracked slightly.<\/p>\n<p>He knew almost everything.<\/p>\n<p>Not everything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Ward do after discovering Ross\u2019s fake?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah looked toward the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Ross is telling the truth, she would punish the lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy stabbing him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElena prefers clean methods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo maybe Marcus did it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why blame Ward?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo get protection from her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Or to turn law enforcement against her.<\/p>\n<p>Ross remained exactly what the wall had called him.<\/p>\n<p>A liar.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds called again after another interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoss changed part of his story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlready?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says Ward didn\u2019t stab him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s convenient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe remembers Marcus moving behind him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Marcus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost said something.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds did first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes. I know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does Ross want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWitness protection consideration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn exchange for the real key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes he actually have it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says he can prove it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gave us one verification detail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA notation written on the back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat notation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cD. CLEAN.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cD is me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah confirmed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wrote that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I hid the key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did it mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you were uninvolved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even on Ward\u2019s key, my innocence had been recorded.<\/p>\n<p>A tiny note in Sarah\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>D. CLEAN.<\/p>\n<p>Ross could not have invented that easily.<\/p>\n<p>He had seen the real thing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says he\u2019ll disclose after a signed agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you give him one?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen get whoever can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoss added a condition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe will surrender the key only to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says you\u2019re the only person in this case with no incentive to steal it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The irony was almost unbearable.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah had married me because I was clean.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus framed me because I was clean.<\/p>\n<p>Ward tested me because I was clean.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Hale spared me because I was clean.<\/p>\n<p>Now Ross trusted me because I was clean.<\/p>\n<p>My innocence had become a role everyone else assigned according to their needs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not taking possession of that thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wouldn\u2019t keep it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not the point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoss won\u2019t disclose otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet him bleed into his hospital pillow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I regretted the sentence immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Not because I cared about Ross.<\/p>\n<p>Because I sounded like Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow if approvals happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah objected the moment she heard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoss chose me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s exactly why no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe doesn\u2019t trust anyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe isn\u2019t supposed to trust anyone. He\u2019s supposed to surrender evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen let him sit in custody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus is still looking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you walking into Ross\u2019s room gives Marcus another target.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe already has me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe always had you at a distance.
