Assisted living outside Tampa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nora walked toward a small office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout eight years ago, before he moved, he gave me instructions concerning a box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur and Reyes exchanged a look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat box?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said if a man named Arthur Hale ever came asking about Peter Mallory, I should contact him before doing anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEight years ago?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid anyone else ask?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nora\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he was working for Mr. Mallory\u2019s family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDescription?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTall. Sixties maybe. Gray hair. Expensive coat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reyes asked, \u201cDid he show identification?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA business card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you still have it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nora opened a drawer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI put it here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYesterday afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho had access to this office?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStaff. Volunteers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reyes immediately called one of the agents.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur asked, \u201cDid you give him anything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t know Father Brennan\u2019s phrase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat phrase?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nora looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re Arthur Hale, you\u2019re supposed to know it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur felt annoyance rise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNora, fifteen years have passed. My wife was dying. He said you might one day return for it, but only if you remembered enough to ask the right question.<\/p>\n<p>Do not look in the church office.<\/p>\n<p>Look where men confess what they are ashamed to say aloud.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014Brennan<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked toward the confessionals.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes followed his gaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo easy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They crossed the sanctuary.<\/p>\n<p>Two old wooden confessionals stood along the side wall.<\/p>\n<p>Dust gathered along their carved edges.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur opened the priest\u2019s side of the first.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>The second contained a kneeler and a small shelf.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes examined the wood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecent scratches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur saw them too.<\/p>\n<p>Bright marks beneath an older hinge.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had opened the panel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYesterday\u2019s visitor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One agent brought tools.<\/p>\n<p>They removed the interior backing.<\/p>\n<p>Behind it was a narrow cavity.<\/p>\n<p>Empty.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reyes crouched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot necessarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed.<\/p>\n<p>A rectangular depression showed in the dust.<\/p>\n<p>Something had definitely been stored there.<\/p>\n<p>But beside it lay a strip of paper.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur picked it up with gloved fingers.<\/p>\n<p>Three handwritten numbers.<\/p>\n<p>17 \u2014 4 \u2014 22.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes photographed them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeaning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>Nora stood several feet away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose aren\u2019t random.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBible reference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reyes looked at the paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChapter seventeen, verse four, twenty-two?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Three separate references maybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur thought of Mallory.<\/p>\n<p>He had not been particularly religious.<\/p>\n<p>But he had liked layered contingencies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould be pew numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nora frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have twenty-two pews.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked around.<\/p>\n<p>Seventeen windows.<\/p>\n<p>Four side doors.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-two\u2014<\/p>\n<p>His gaze settled on the hymn boards.<\/p>\n<p>Three numbers were posted from Sunday service.<\/p>\n<p>Not those.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was here fifteen years ago that isn\u2019t now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nora thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOld memorial plaques. We remodeled the west wall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did they go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStorage downstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur and Reyes moved simultaneously.<\/p>\n<p>The basement smelled of damp stone and cardboard.<\/p>\n<p>Nora led them to shelves filled with church records, decorations, and retired fixtures.<\/p>\n<p>Old brass plaques leaned against one wall.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur counted.<\/p>\n<p>Seventeen.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the fourth.<\/p>\n<p>Name: Samuel Whitcomb.<\/p>\n<p>Dates beneath.<\/p>\n<p>No connection.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-second item did not exist.<\/p>\n<p>Then Reyes said, \u201cMaybe seventeen-four-twenty-two is a date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur froze.<\/p>\n<p>April 17, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Too recent.<\/p>\n<p>Seventeen April, twenty-two\u2014<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould be locker numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nora shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>Then one agent called from upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgent Reyes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They returned to the sanctuary.<\/p>\n<p>The agent held a thin sheet in an evidence sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFound behind the adjacent panel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur read it.<\/p>\n<p>A photocopy.<\/p>\n<p>A bank deposit slip.<\/p>\n<p>Account number mostly blacked out.<\/p>\n<p>Depositor: P. Mallory.<\/p>\n<p>Date: April 22, fifteen years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Amount: $17.04.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeventeen-four-twenty-two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur understood.<\/p>\n<p>The numbers were a verification code tied to the slip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy deposit seventeen dollars and four cents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the amount is the message.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reyes studied the bank name.<\/p>\n<p>The institution no longer existed.<\/p>\n<p>Bought out years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>But the routing trail could be followed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafe-deposit box,\u201d Arthur said.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nora whispered, \u201cFather Brennan mentioned a bank once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Peter believed banks were safer than government offices because thieves had to fill out forms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sounded exactly like Mallory.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes was already contacting financial investigators.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur walked back to the confessional.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had been there yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>If they opened the cavity, what had they taken?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the deposit slip was deliberately left behind.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe because it led nowhere without the code.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe the important item had already gone.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur examined the hinge marks.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh metal dust.<\/p>\n<p>Professional enough to open the panel.<\/p>\n<p>Sloppy enough to leave evidence.<\/p>\n<p>That bothered him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReyes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was staged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they knew where the cavity was, they could have left no sign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe they were rushed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey came yesterday afternoon when the church was open. They had time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reyes considered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think they wanted us to know someone beat us here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIntimidation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDirection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked at the empty compartment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey want us following this trail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the worst answer.<\/p>\n<p>His phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>Lily.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice sounded strained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing here. Claire brought me something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard filed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor divorce?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her next words came flat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe filed an emergency petition saying I\u2019m mentally incompetent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Lily continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wants temporary authority over medical and financial decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reyes heard enough from his expression.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn what basis?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoctor\u2019s records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same doctor Richard had used to construct a history of instability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe planned this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire with you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut her on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire came to the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re responding immediately.
