missing.

So were several clothes, a laptop, and one handgun.

It looked like flight.

But Marcus specialized in making one thing look like another.

The note on the counter became the center of everything.

THE HUSBAND KNOWS.

No signature.

Printed letters.

Paper from Ross’s home office.

“Could Ross have clean.

Too clean.

No sudden deposits.

No offshore accounts.

No obvious bribes.

But then analysts found something else.

Property debt.

A vacation home purchased twenty years earlier had been paid off through a trust whose beneficial owner was hidden.

The trust traced backward through three jurisdictions.

Eventually to a company associated with Elena Ward.

I stared at the chart.

“Ward paid Ross?”

“Maybe.”

“Marcus used answer.

Chen provided the next piece.

Under formal questioning, she admitted Ross had contacted Marcus during the original case.

Not to help him escape.

To be.”

According to Chen, Ross believed arresting everyone connected to Ward’s network would collapse several ongoing intelligence operations.

Some targets were feeding information on larger criminal structures.

Others were under surveillance.

Ross wanted selected figures left untouched temporarily.

Marcus discovered others?”

“We’re checking.”

“So Marcus had enough ambiguity to destroy him.”

“Exactly.”

The arrangement formed slowly.

Ross would feed Marcus limited information.

Marcus would provide intelligence on Ward’s network.

Neither trusted the other.

Both kept understood.

Not moral protection.

Self-protection.

Yet it may have helped keep me alive.

“What happened after the traffic stop?”

Chen had described it.

Ross panicked.

Marcus accelerated.

Sarah resisted.

The arrests occurred before the forty-eight-hour delay Marcus expected.

Someone had bypassed Ross’s attempt to slow enforcement.

“Who?” I asked.

Reynolds looked almost proud.

“Me.”

I
