Once your authentication triggered, a security check was initiated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur thought of the package.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs anyone there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one should be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reyes studied his expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s at your house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur glanced at Lily.<\/p>\n<p>She answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA second copy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reyes immediately reached for her phone.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur moved toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you going?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes stood between him and the corridor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf somebody connected to Mercer has already gone there, you walking in alone helps nobody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat copy may contain the only backup.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have the first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnless the first is damaged, incomplete, challenged, or somehow compromised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reyes could not disagree.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLily made two copies for a reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily pushed herself higher against the pillow and winced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t go alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked at her battered face.<\/p>\n<p>Hours earlier, she had begged him to come get her.<\/p>\n<p>Now she was asking him not to become another person she had to fear losing.<\/p>\n<p>He returned to the bedside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reyes was already speaking into her phone.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur listened.<\/p>\n<p>Units.<\/p>\n<p>Residence.<\/p>\n<p>Preserve scene.<\/p>\n<p>Possible evidence retrieval.<\/p>\n<p>Then Reyes paused.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d Arthur asked.<\/p>\n<p>She held up one finger.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur waited.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes listened another ten seconds before ending the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe security team reached your house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe front door was open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas anything taken?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re checking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>Not the satellite phone.<\/p>\n<p>His ordinary cell.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked at Reyes.<\/p>\n<p>She nodded for him to answer on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Richard\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>Calm again.<\/p>\n<p>Too calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should have stayed retired, Arthur.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily went pale.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes immediately began signaling to someone outside the room.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Richard continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think one recording changes anything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked at Lily.<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head faintly, warning him not to react.<\/p>\n<p>He listened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou embarrassed me in my own home,\u201d Richard said. \u201cYou took my wife. You brought strangers into my business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLily left you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019ll come back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard laughed.<\/p>\n<p>The sound that had filled the Easter living room with confidence now sounded forced.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur waited.<\/p>\n<p>Richard said, \u201cAsk yourself something. If I knew she was collecting files, why did I let her keep collecting them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes wrote something quickly on a pad.<\/p>\n<p>KEEP HIM TALKING.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur said, \u201cBecause you didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s breathing changed.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur had struck something.<\/p>\n<p>Then Richard recovered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re an old man playing with things you don\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked at Reyes.<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>The trace\u2014or whatever modern equivalent they were using\u2014needed time.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur replied, \u201cThen explain them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard laughed again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I think I\u2019ll let you discover it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line went dead.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes immediately made another call.<\/p>\n<p>Lily stared at Arthur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>Then Reyes\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>She listened.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes moved to Arthur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reyes lowered the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe team found the package.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it opened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs the copy gone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reyes listened to the person still speaking through the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Then she frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes continued listening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe memory card is still there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur felt no relief.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had broken into his house, opened the package, found the hidden evidence\u2014<\/p>\n<p>and deliberately left it behind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what did they take?\u201d Lily asked.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes repeated the question into the phone.<\/p>\n<p>A moment passed.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression changed again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey didn\u2019t take anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat makes no sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey left something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reyes listened carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at Lily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA photograph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur felt the room become very quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reyes swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily\u2019s face drained of color.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stood perfectly still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reyes asked the team.<\/p>\n<p>The answer came.<\/p>\n<p>She lowered the phone slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe photograph was taken three weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reyes did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur understood why.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt your house, Arthur.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily looked at her father.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe picture shows Lily standing on your front porch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur remembered the visit.<\/p>\n<p>Lily had arrived unexpectedly one Saturday carrying groceries. They had made soup, watched an old movie, and talked about nothing important because she had not yet found the courage to tell him what mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had been watching them.<\/p>\n<p>Three weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>Before Easter.<\/p>\n<p>Before the phone call.<\/p>\n<p>Before Arthur activated anything from his former life.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked at Lily.<\/p>\n<p>The fear in her face had changed.<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s violence had been terrifying because it happened behind closed doors.<\/p>\n<p>This was different.<\/p>\n<p>This meant someone outside the marriage had known Lily was preparing an escape.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had followed her to Arthur\u2019s home.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had photographed her there.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had waited until today to leave proof that they could reach both of them.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur picked up the black case.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes watched him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you thinking?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked through the glass toward the secure corridor.<\/p>\n<p>For fifteen years, he had believed the dangerous part of his life was behind him.<\/p>\n<p>He had been wrong.<\/p>\n<p>But the greater mistake belonged to whoever had entered his house.<\/p>\n<p>They had expected the photograph to frighten him into retreat.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, they had confirmed something Richard had desperately tried to deny.<\/p>\n<p>Lily\u2019s evidence mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Enough to frighten people who had not been standing in that Easter living room.<\/p>\n<p>Enough for someone to watch Arthur before he even knew there was a fight coming.<\/p>\n<p>He returned to his daughter and took her hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked at the bruises around her throat.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Reyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPreserve the photograph. The package.
