A folded road map sat behind the headrest. Her father barged into my house, assaulted my mother, and is now attempting to remove my wife against my wishes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked at Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told him that quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Lily whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Wallace finally addressed her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMa\u2019am, are you safe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur saw the trap in the question. Victim fears local medical and law-enforcement contacts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chief Wallace lowered his plate.<\/p>\n<p>Finally.<\/p>\n<p>Richard stopped smiling.<\/p>\n<p>The voice on the phone asked, \u201cIs the victim conscious?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImmediate life-threatening bleeding?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo visible arterial bleeding. Possible rib injury. Facial trauma. Neck compression marks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wallace moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur raised one finger without looking at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not approach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wallace stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur,\u201d he said, \u201cyou\u2019re making a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The voice on the satellite phone heard him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas that the compromised authority?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not surrender the victim or evidence. Do not provide a statement locally. Do not disclose destination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>Transport.<\/p>\n<p>That meant the protocol was still active at a level he had not expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMinutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard heard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>Wallace did not.<\/p>\n<p>The chief looked toward the road.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn came down the final step.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is absurd.
