inscription.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve looked at that ring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot closely enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat number?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I tell you over this call, Harbor is useless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hated that she was right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Marcus know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows the ring matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen if he\u2019s watching me\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe may be waiting for you to retrieve it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds entered the office while I was still holding the phone.<\/p>\n<p>I told him.<\/p>\n<p>His bank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus knows him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnows who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bank manager.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The old world had reached into another ordinary place.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds took over immediately.<\/p>\n<p>The ring would be recovered under controlled conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody would approach the box casually.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody would reveal why.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, I understood what Marcus\u2019s Christmas card really meant.<\/p>\n<p>Still building good lives?<\/p>\n<p>He had watched Martin build identities.<\/p>\n<p>He had watched Sarah build Harbor.<\/p>\n<p>He had watched me rebuild my ordinary life after prison took her away.<\/p>\n<p>And now, after years of silence, he was testing how much of that rebuilt life he
