Ordinary introductions were no longer available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence angered me because it was partly true.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does Marcus want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you have something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe thinks you do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ward picked up another bag of coffee and examined the label.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe missing portion of his insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what that means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither do I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou expect me to believe that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She returned the coffee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBelieve evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Marcus?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGone again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not stop him when you saw him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes met mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I wanted to know where he would lead me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt a chill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe came here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot directly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe began asking about the old case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople who should know better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNames.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot in a grocery aisle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the store entrance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome talk to Reynolds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I don\u2019t know who inside his world Marcus can see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou expect me to trust you instead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI expect you to trust nobody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officer Martinez had told me almost the same thing years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Be careful who you trust.<\/p>\n<p>Ward reached into her coat.<\/p>\n<p>I stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>She removed a receipt.<\/p>\n<p>On the back she wrote a phone number.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMemorize it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not joining your spy network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t a network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn emergency number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what emergency?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Marcus contacts you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would I call you instead of police?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall both.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She handed me the receipt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if he mentions the word \u2018Harbor,\u2019 do not answer any questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarbor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ward\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, I saw genuine unease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething Sarah hid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Marcus?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re telling me Sarah kept another secret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ward gave a humorless smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurely that can\u2019t surprise you anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She walked away.<\/p>\n<p>I stood beside the coffee for perhaps ten seconds before Reynolds appeared at the end of the aisle.<\/p>\n<p>He moved quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the corner where Ward had disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou really don\u2019t know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer frightened me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElena Ward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds\u2019s face went still.<\/p>\n<p>He reached for his radio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened my hand.<\/p>\n<p>The receipt was still there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus is alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he\u2019s looking for something Sarah hid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarbor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds\u2019s reaction told me the word was not new to him.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=29774\">Click here to continue reading: PART 14: Reynolds Knew What Harbor Meant, but the File He Finally Opened Showed Sarah Had Built It Around My Life Without Telling Me<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reynolds took possession of Martin Hale\u2019s Christmas card that afternoon.
