Every person could be priced, threatened, replaced, or redirected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Sarah proved him wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why he hated you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same conclusion Sarah had given me.<\/p>\n<p>From a different mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he ever say what he intended to do to me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin looked uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Sarah refused to leave you, Marcus intended to make you disappear during the Canadian leg.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became completely still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour forged financial trail would remain. Sarah would be blamed. Marcus would continue under the new identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Sarah know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Reynolds.<\/p>\n<p>That mattered.<\/p>\n<p>All those years, I had wondered whether Sarah\u2019s resistance meant hesitation over sacrificing me.<\/p>\n<p>Now Martin was telling us Marcus had concealed the worst part even from her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe thought he might hurt me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut she didn\u2019t know he had already decided.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood and walked toward the office window.<\/p>\n<p>The parking lot below looked ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>Someone loaded groceries into an SUV.<\/p>\n<p>A delivery truck backed toward a loading area.<\/p>\n<p>The whole world continued in plain sight while hidden decisions could alter a life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat stopped him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot law enforcement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat too. But first Sarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe refused to bring you home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe sent the warning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe changed the route.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then Martinez pulled us over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus needed you unaware and moving where he expected. After that traffic stop, he no longer knew what you knew, what Sarah had told authorities, or whether law enforcement was watching the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo he abandoned the plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe abandoned that version.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat version came next?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe financial frame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe twenty-million transfer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it never executed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Peter interfered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Martin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour brother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter Peter met you, he believed you truly knew nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe coffee-shop meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe disabled the transfer instruction before it could complete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould he do that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had access through one of Ward\u2019s financial investigators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat would explain why the instruction existed but never settled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter told me he wasn\u2019t going to let an innocent man carry Marcus\u2019s theft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about Thomas Reed\u2014Peter Hale\u2014sitting across from me in a coffee shop, asking careful questions.<\/p>\n<p>At the time I had seen a salesman.<\/p>\n<p>In reality, he had been deciding whether I deserved to be sacrificed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe boating accident?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t believe it was an accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoss?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three possible killers.<\/p>\n<p>No certainty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you stay alive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin gave a thin smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI stopped being useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds closed his notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Martin looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His attorney moved to end the interview.<\/p>\n<p>Before we left, I asked one final question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Marcus dead?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin looked toward the closed door.<\/p>\n<p>Then back at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought so for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast winter, someone mailed me a Christmas card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo signature?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s face had gone pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill building good lives?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was something Marcus used to say to me when I created identities for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds asked, \u201cPostmark?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoston.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you have the card?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you report it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I wanted to pretend it was a joke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen was this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDecember eighteenth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Less than a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus Vale, the man we had treated as a ghost from Sarah\u2019s past, might not have been dead.<\/p>\n<p>He might not even have been far away.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Neither of us needed to say what we were thinking.<\/p>\n<p>If Marcus was alive, then the forged companies, the missing millions, the Montreal plan, Elena Ward, Peter Hale, and Sarah\u2019s years in prison were not merely remnants of a closed case.<\/p>\n<p>They were unfinished business.<\/p>\n<p>And somewhere, a man who had once decided I was useful precisely because I knew nothing might now realize I had spent years learning everything.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=29773\">Click here to continue reading: PART 13: The Christmas Card Marcus Sent Martin Hale Contained a Second Message That Turned an Old Threat Into a Present One<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reynolds did not want me anywhere near Martin Hale.
