Too many witnesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo her house was protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor that night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the next morning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI met someone who helped route the anonymous alert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe client emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBarton?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo such client.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why didn\u2019t you run?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause after the stop I couldn\u2019t tell who was watching whom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s when you began waiting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd law enforcement moved first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere you relieved when they arrested you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question surprised her.<\/p>\n<p>Then she answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven knowing you\u2019d go to prison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Marcus couldn\u2019t reach you through me anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I studied her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExcept he nearly framed me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would have told investigators if I had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time I believed her too.<\/p>\n<p>That frightened me more than distrust.<\/p>\n<p>Believing Sarah in small pieces could become dangerous if I let those pieces rewrite everything else.<\/p>\n<p>She had still chosen the network.<\/p>\n<p>Still lied.<\/p>\n<p>Still used me.<\/p>\n<p>Still allowed the danger to grow.<\/p>\n<p>One truthful act near the end did not erase a decade of deception.<\/p>\n<p>But neither did a decade of deception erase every truthful act.<\/p>\n<p>That was the complexity I had resisted for years.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah was guilty.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah had used me.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah had loved me.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah had endangered me.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah had also, eventually and imperfectly, tried to keep me alive.<\/p>\n<p>All those things could be true at once.<\/p>\n<p>Before I left, I asked one final question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell Reynolds about the missing money during sentencing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause by then I understood what Marcus had done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFramed me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t just steal from the organization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe stole from someone outside it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA man the organization itself was afraid of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Marcus used my identity in the trail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo if this man followed the money\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe could eventually find you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes he know my name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah looked at me for a long moment.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cIf Marcus\u2019s plan worked, your name may be the only one he knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=29769\">Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Name Behind the Missing Millions Forced Reynolds to Admit Sarah Had Been Protecting Me From More Than Marcus Vale<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reynolds asked me to come to the same federal building where I had first seen photographs of Sarah\u2019s hidden life.
