I had dropped her near there once years ago, although even then she had asked me to leave her at a coffee shop because she said she was meeting a colleague before going inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know the street address.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHave you visited?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMet her supervisor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeen to a company event?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each answer made the next one harder.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds finally said, \u201cThe company doesn&#39;t exist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe employer your wife has named on financial documents and in conversations with you has no legitimate operation matching what she&#39;s described.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand why you think that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, you don&#39;t. She&#39;s worked there for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has told you she&#39;s worked there for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I walked toward the kitchen window.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, Sarah&#39;s mother&#39;s garden looked painfully ordinary. A sprinkler turned slowly across a row of tomatoes. Two houses down, someone pushed a lawn mower.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you saying she actually does?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds answered carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe she&#39;s involved in laundering criminal proceeds through a network of shell companies and controlled accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t understand the sentence at first.<\/p>\n<p>Or perhaps I understood it and refused to accept it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy Sarah?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know another one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>He continued.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators had been tracing money through businesses that appeared legitimate on paper but conducted little or no real commerce. Funds moved through accounts, were divided, transferred, relabeled, combined with legitimate revenue, and sent onward.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah, Reynolds said, appeared to play a significant role in managing those movements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow significant?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re still establishing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHas she hurt anyone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinancially?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I mean physically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t believe Sarah herself is violent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word herself lodged in my mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means some people connected to the operation concern us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I rubbed my forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy warn me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause information associated with your wife&#39;s identity appeared during the traffic stop. Officer Martinez recognized enough of the alert to understand that you might be unknowingly exposed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExposed to what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinancial loss, retaliation, flight planning. Potentially worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlight planning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have reason to believe Sarah is preparing contingencies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt suddenly cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of contingencies?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlternate identities. Money positioned outside her usual accounts. Arrangements consistent with someone preparing to disappear quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my wedding ring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re saying she&#39;s planning to leave me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m saying she may be preparing to leave everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For ten years, I had thought Sarah and I were saving for retirement.<\/p>\n<p>We had discussed replacing the kitchen cabinets.<\/p>\n<p>We had spent three evenings the previous month comparing vacation rentals for an anniversary trip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much of this does she know you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s not something I can discuss on an unsecured call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes she know she&#39;s being watched?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause your position changed yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were already connected to her financially and domestically. The stop created uncertainty. We don&#39;t know what Sarah inferred from Martinez separating you from the vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered her asking what he had handed me.<\/p>\n<p>The roofer.<\/p>\n<p>My stupid imaginary roofer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe&#39;s suspicious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she ask questions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I told him.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds listened without interrupting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Martinez gave me a roofing contractor&#39;s card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To my surprise, Reynolds laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn&#39;t trying to be clever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood. Don&#39;t search her computer, confront her, follow her, question her friends, or suddenly become interested in details you&#39;ve ignored for ten years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know how long we&#39;ve been married?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know a great deal about both of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That should have reassured me.<\/p>\n<p>It didn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you know about me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough to believe you aren&#39;t involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBelieve?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re married to someone suspected of moving substantial amounts of criminal money. We don&#39;t make assumptions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood again.<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen suddenly felt too small.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe meet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah could return at any moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He gave me the name of a diner forty minutes away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome alone. Don&#39;t tell anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>For several minutes I stayed at the kitchen table with the phone in my hand.<\/p>\n<p>Then I heard a car.<\/p>\n<p>I moved to the window.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>She was back early.<\/p>\n<p>I barely had time to put the phone down before she entered through the side door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She carried two coffees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought your meeting would take longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanceled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She handed me one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDidn&#39;t sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of yesterday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>I forced myself to sip the coffee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah leaned against the counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did that cop really say to you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question was casual.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes weren&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>I shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe roofer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat&#39;s his name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart kicked once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe roofer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>Then laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re seriously testing me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m curious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t memorize the card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShow me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The business card was still in my wallet.<\/p>\n<p>That accidental fact may have saved me.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled it out and handed it to her.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah read it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently his brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned the card over.<\/p>\n<p>There was nothing on the back.<\/p>\n<p>Then she gave it back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWeird cop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah smiled.<\/p>\n<p>But for the rest of breakfast, I felt her watching me.<\/p>\n<p>I told her I needed to go home and deal with paperwork I&#39;d forgotten.<\/p>\n<p>She decided to stay with her mother.<\/p>\n<p>Forty minutes later, I was sitting across from Detective Adam Reynolds in the rear booth of a diner beside an interstate interchange.<\/p>\n<p>He was younger than I expected, perhaps late thirties, with a dark tie loosened at the collar and a paper cup of coffee he barely touched.<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t waste time.<\/p>\n<p>He placed several photographs on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah entering an office building.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah meeting a man beside a parking garage.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah carrying a black laptop bag I had never seen.<\/p>\n<p>Another photograph showed her at an airport.<\/p>\n<p>The date printed at the bottom caught my attention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat can&#39;t be right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was in Denver that day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe sent me pictures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Denver?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds studied me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid the pictures include her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I tried to remember.<\/p>\n<p>A hotel room.<\/p>\n<p>A skyline.<\/p>\n<p>Food.<\/p>\n<p>A conference badge photographed beside a coffee cup.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah wasn&#39;t visible in any of them.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds slid another image forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was taken ninety minutes after she sent you the skyline photograph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah was walking into a building less than twenty miles from our house.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped touching the photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds opened a folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer employment history is fabricated. Several professional references lead to numbers controlled by associates. Some tax documentation appears legitimate because income was routed through entities built specifically to survive basic scrutiny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo she&#39;s been doing this our entire marriage?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;ve investigated her eight months. You must know when it started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know the financial network predates our investigation. We don&#39;t yet know when Sarah entered it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked down at her photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you find her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough that I&#39;m not going to put the number on a diner table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens to me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat depends partly on what you do next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe Sarah has been preparing an exit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He showed me records indicating accounts I had never known existed.<\/p>\n<p>Transfers.<\/p>\n<p>Corporate names.<\/p>\n<p>Numbers with more zeroes than anything Sarah and I had ever possessed together.<\/p>\n<p>One document contained a variation of her name.<\/p>\n<p>Another contained a different surname entirely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has another identity?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly more than one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Sarah even her real name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Williams her real maiden name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re verifying parts of her history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed quietly.<\/p>\n<p>There was nothing humorous in it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI met her parents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer mother is her mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least I&#39;ve got that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds let the silence sit.<\/p>\n<p>Then he asked about our finances.<\/p>\n<p>Joint checking.<\/p>\n<p>Mortgage.<\/p>\n<p>Retirement accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Credit cards.<\/p>\n<p>Insurance.<\/p>\n<p>Anything Sarah could access without my approval.<\/p>\n<p>With every answer, his expression became more concerned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to protect yourself,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFreeze everything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Not yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she&#39;ll notice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I&#39;m supposed to leave my money where she can take it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the moment, we need her to believe nothing has changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want me to spy on my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want you to decide whether you&#39;re willing to cooperate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if I don&#39;t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe continue without you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill you arrest her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the case is ready.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can&#39;t promise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the diner window.<\/p>\n<p>Cars moved along the interstate.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere among all those ordinary people, there had to be someone whose life still made sense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would cooperating involve?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMostly observing. Maintaining your normal routine. Answering questions.
