34 – When William’s Birthday Arrived Without Him, Tyler and I Finally Spoke About the One Thing Money, Court Orders, and Apologies Could Never Repair

William would have turned seventy-six that spring.

I knew the date was coming.

I did not expect it to hurt.

That was foolish.

Grief becomes quieter.

It does not become obedient.

I woke at 4:40 in the morning with the unmistakable sense that I had forgotten something.

Then I saw the date on the clock.

April seventeenth.

William’s birthday.

For forty-three years, that date required planning.

Cake.

Dinner.

A gift he insisted he did not need.

Usually some tool he had already researched but pretended not to want.

After he died, the first birthday felt unbearable.

The second became tangled in lawyers and business records.

Now the crisis had ended.

There was nothing to distract me.

I lay in bed and missed him.

Not the wiser version we had created from recordings and notes.

Not the careful investor.

Not the man who anticipated Tyler’s mistakes.

Just William.

The person who snored when sleeping on his back.

Who hated cilantro.

Who bought terrible socks.

Who could never throw away a screwdriver.

I cried before getting out of bed.

Then I made coffee in his repaired mug.

That may have been sentimental.

I allowed it.

At eight, Tyler texted.

Thinking about Dad.

I answered:

Me too.

Nothing else.

At ten, he called.

“Can we go somewhere?”

“Where?”

“The lake.”

I knew which one.

The photograph.

The blue ceramic dish had once held keys after we returned from that trip.

William and I had taken Tyler to the lake many times when he was young.

Later, William and Tyler went alone.

Fishing.

Talking business.

Arguing, probably.

“When?”

“Today.”

I looked around my quiet kitchen.

“Yes.”

Tyler picked me up.

He drove.

That was another reversal.

For decades, William drove everywhere.

After he died, I drove because control felt necessary.

Now I could sit in the passenger seat without feeling powerless.

The lake was nearly two hours away.

We spoke little during the drive.

No need.

At a small market near the water, Tyler bought sandwiches.

“I brought money.”

“I know.”

“You’re paying?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I invited you.”

Fair.

We walked toward an old picnic area.

The same one from the photograph.

At least I thought so.

Twenty years changes trees.

It changes people more.

We sat at a table overlooking the water.

Wind moved across the surface in long silver streaks.

Tyler unwrapped his sandwich.

“Dad used to hate this bread.”

“Yes.”

“He said it tasted like insulation.”

I laughed.

“That sounds right.”

For several minutes, we remembered harmless things.

William teaching Tyler to cast.

William losing a tackle box in the water.

William insisting he knew how to back a boat trailer while nearly removing a mailbox.

The laughter helped.

Then Tyler became quiet.

“I’m sorry.”

I looked at him.

“For what?”

“Today.”

“That is not your fault.”

“I know.”

“Then?”

He stared toward the lake.

“I took the last year of his life from you.”

My chest tightened.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“What do you mean?”

“You should’ve been grieving Dad.”

“I was.”

“You were dealing with me.”

“That is different.”

“Is it?”

I looked at the water.

He continued.

“You found out about the company because I lied.”

“Yes.”

“You had to reopen the estate.”

“Yes.”

“Lawyers. Bank. GreenStone. Court.”

“Yes.”

“Instead of just missing him.”

I turned toward Tyler.

“Grief would not have been simple without you.”

“No, but—”

“No.”

He stopped.

I needed him to hear this correctly.

“You complicated it.”

His face tightened.

“Yes.”

“You hurt me.”

“Yes.”

“You forced me to learn things about William I might never have discovered.”

“Yes.”

“But you did not steal my grief.”

Tyler looked down.

“I feel like I did.”

“That feeling is another attempt to become responsible for everything.”

He looked at me.

Even guilt can be egotistical.

I had learned that painfully.

“You were part of the mess,” I said.

“Yes.”

“Not the whole universe.”

He almost smiled.

“Dad would like that.”

“Probably.”

We sat quietly.

Then Tyler said, “Do you wish you never found the recording?”

I thought.

“No.”

“Even though he admitted lying?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because truth changed my memory of him.”

“That sounds bad.”

“It was.”

I looked at the lake.

“At first.”

“And now?”

“Now I love the real man.”

Tyler said nothing.

“I used to think discovering William’s mistakes damaged the marriage retroactively.”

“Didn’t it?”

“Some.”

“How can it not?”

“Because forty-three years still happened.”

I could see he was listening closely.

“The breakfasts happened.”

“Yes.”

“The arguments.”

“Yes.”

“The vacations.”

“Yes.”

“The hospital.”

His face tightened.

“Yes.”

“The good decisions and bad ones.”

“Yes.”

“A secret does not erase every honest thing around it.”

Tyler looked toward the water.

“Does a forgery erase everything around it?”

“No.”

He asked that as a son.

Not as a businessman.

Not as a defendant.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“You don’t think differently about my whole childhood?”

I smiled sadly.

“No.”

“What about who I am?”

“I think differently about parts.”

He nodded.

“That’s fair.”

“Tyler.”

He looked at me.

“You keep wanting one verdict.”

“Good person or bad person.”

“Yes.”

“That would be easier.”

“Life is rude.”

He laughed.

I continued.

“You did something seriously wrong.”

“Yes.”

“You also changed behavior afterward.”

“Yes.”

“Both remain true.”

He swallowed.

“I still dream about Dad sometimes.”

“What happens?”

“Usually nothing.”

“What does that mean?”

“He’s just there.”

“Does he talk?”

“Sometimes.”

“What does he say?”

Tyler looked embarrassed.

“Mostly normal stuff.”

“Such as?”

“Check the tire pressure.”

I laughed so hard a couple at another table turned toward us.

“That is absolutely William.”

Tyler smiled.

“Once he asked whether I’d paid the electric bill.”

“Also believable.”

“He never talks about the company.”

“That is probably your mind being merciful.”

“Maybe.”

I thought about my own dreams.

William rarely appeared.

When he did, I usually knew he was dead even while dreaming.

That strange double awareness.

Presence and absence at once.

“Do you dream about him?” Tyler asked.

“Yes.”

“What does he say?”

“Usually nothing.”

“Really?”

“He looks at me.”

“That sounds creepy.”

“It is comforting.”

“What do you say?”

“Mostly I ask where he’s been.”

Tyler’s eyes filled.

Mine too.

We stopped talking for a while.

The lake moved.

A child somewhere screamed happily.

A boat engine started.

William was absent from all of it.

That was grief.

Not a problem.

Not paperwork.

Not something to solve.

Absence experienced in the middle of continuing life.

Tyler eventually asked, “Are you still angry at him?”

“Yes.”

He seemed surprised.

“After all this time?”

“Yes.”

“For the money?”

“Partly.”

“The secrecy?”

“Mostly.”

He nodded.

“Do you forgive him?”

“Yes.”

“How can both be true?”

I smiled.

“You ask many questions for a grown man.”

“Occupational hazard.”

“I forgave him because I understand enough.”

“Not everything?”

“No.”

“Wouldn’t you need everything?”

“No.”

That was another lesson.

Full explanation is often impossible.

Especially after death.

Forgiveness sometimes begins where evidence ends.

Not by pretending.

By accepting the remaining uncertainty.

“I know why William hid some things,” I said.

“Protecting you.”

“Protecting himself.”

Tyler looked at me.

“From what?”

“My anger.”

He nodded.

“I understand that.”

“Yes.”

“You’re scary.”

“Good.”

He laughed.

Then his face softened.

“I wish he had told you.”

“So do I.”

“Maybe I would’ve changed sooner.”

“Maybe.”

That word again.

“Maybe he would have confronted me harder.”

“Maybe.”

“Maybe the company wouldn’t have failed.”

“Maybe.”

Tyler smiled faintly.

“You really do love that word.”

“I trust it more than certainty.”

We finished lunch.

Then walked along the shore.

Near the water, Tyler picked up a flat stone.

He skipped it twice.

William could manage six or seven.

Tyler tried again.

Three.

“Pathetic,” I said.

“Dad cheated.”

“With physics?”

“Yes.”

We laughed.

As we turned back, Tyler stopped.

“I brought something.”

I groaned.

“What is it with this family and objects?”

“Small.”

He took William’s old tape measure from his jacket pocket.

The one found in the company storage box.

“What are you doing with that?”

“I kept it.”

“I know.”

“I think you should.”

“No.”

Tyler frowned.

“Why?”

“It was his work thing with you.”

“So?”

“So keep it.”

He looked at the scratched metal casing.

“I thought you’d want it.”

“I have enough William.”

The sentence sounded wrong.

Tyler looked startled.

I corrected myself.

“I have enough objects.”

He understood.

“What do I do with it?”

“Use it.”

He laughed.

“It’s ancient.”

“Still works?”

He pulled the tape out.

“Yes.”

“Then use it.”

“For what?”

“Measure your onions.”

He stared at me.

Then laughed so hard he had to bend forward.

That was how we spent William’s seventy-sixth birthday.

Not at a grave.

Not signing papers.

Not reconciling assets.

At a lake.

Laughing about onions and tape measures.

Missing him honestly.

On the drive home, Tyler asked one final question.

“Do you think he’d forgive me?”

I looked out the window.

“I cannot speak for him.”

Tyler nodded.

He looked disappointed.

Then I continued.

“But I know he loved you when he was angry with you.”

Tyler’s hands tightened on the steering wheel.

“That may be enough.”

“Yes.”

When we reached my house, Tyler walked me to the door.

I dropped my keys into the blue ceramic dish.

He noticed.

“You still use it.”

“Yes.”

“Glad I found it.”

“Me too.”

He started to leave.

“Tyler.”

He turned.

“Happy birthday to your father.”

His eyes filled.

“Yeah.”

He smiled.

“Happy birthday, Dad.”

Then he left.

I stood in the doorway until his car disappeared.

For years, I thought closure meant the pain ended.

Now I understood closure differently.

It means the story stops demanding a different past.

William had hidden things.

Tyler had failed badly.

I had surrendered too much.

None of that would change.

The question was whether we could live honestly beside what happened.

That night, I opened William’s last note.

Keep a room for yourself in your own life.

I smiled.

“I did.”

Then I placed the note back in the drawer.

Not because I was finished loving him.

Because I no longer needed to keep asking the dead for permission to live.
