know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrame it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He understood now from the other side.<\/p>\n<p>Rescuing can be flattering.<\/p>\n<p>It makes the rescuer feel competent.<\/p>\n<p>Necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Generous.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the person being rescued pays the hidden cost.<\/p>\n<p>They never discover what they can do.<\/p>\n<p>I had done that to Tyler long before he did it to me.<\/p>\n<p>Not with everything.<\/p>\n<p>But enough.<\/p>\n<p>When his business first struggled, William and I gave money.<\/p>\n<p>Then more.<\/p>\n<p>Then thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is all I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tyler kicked a pebble off the sidewalk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad liked rescuing me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer embarrassed me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause being needed feels a lot like being loved if you don\u2019t examine it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tyler looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose are usually your best lines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father and I worried that if we stopped helping, you would think we didn\u2019t believe in you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI probably would have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI might\u2019ve been wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Exactly.<\/p>\n<p>Parents cannot organize every choice around preventing their children from misunderstanding them.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the misunderstanding must happen.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes disappointment is survivable.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes love says no and waits.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler understood that now.<\/p>\n<p>So did I.<\/p>\n<p>Spring arrived.<\/p>\n<p>My garden improved because I finally hired someone to teach me what I was doing wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently watering everything whenever I Tyler.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI keep wanting someone to guarantee it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you live with that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think marriage always had uncertainty.
