No speeches. You took a pottery class without consulting me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoodbye.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I told her about Tyler\u2019s question.<\/p>\n<p>Diane became quieter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat must have been exhausting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas he upset?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA little.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he argue?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen there\u2019s part of your answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was right.<\/p>\n<p>Old Tyler would have negotiated trust like a contract.<\/p>\n<p>New Tyler had accepted the limit.<\/p>\n<p>That mattered.<\/p>\n<p>A week later, I received another sign.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler arrived for dinner carrying an envelope.<\/p>\n<p>My body stiffened automatically.<\/p>\n<p>He noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot legal paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat still sounds dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He placed it on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a copy of his annual credit report.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTransparency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I slid it back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t want to see?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what you thought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pushed the envelope toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not need to inspect you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you said you don\u2019t completely trust me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat does not make me your probation officer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to show you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I appreciate the intention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why not look?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause your financial life belongs to you and Jessica.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He considered that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCorrect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven after everything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEspecially after everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tyler looked almost relieved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I still confuse accountability with giving everybody access.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCounselor says I overcorrect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds accurate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He put the report away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor refusing to read your credit report?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParenthood is strange.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica arrived twenty minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>They had driven separately because she came from work.<\/p>\n<p>She kissed Tyler hello.<\/p>\n<p>Not performatively.<\/p>\n<p>Not nervously.<\/p>\n<p>Ordinary affection.<\/p>\n<p>I noticed how much I had begun appreciating ordinary things.<\/p>\n<p>During dinner, they mentioned their savings goal.<\/p>\n<p>No numbers.<\/p>\n<p>I did not ask.<\/p>\n<p>Another small victory.<\/p>\n<p>Then Jessica said, \u201cWe\u2019ve decided not to buy for at least eighteen months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tyler pointed his fork at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSee?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t say anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour face did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy face is seventy-one years old.
