sighed.

“Meet the probation officer.”

“Good.”

“Then finish paperwork with GreenStone.”

“Good.”

“Then pack more evening, he arrived carrying bread from a bakery and a bag of groceries.

“I said bread.”

“I know.”

“What is all this?”

“Vegetables.”

“Why?”

“You said last week your tomatoes were failing.”

“I did not ask you to replace my garden with both heard it.

Months earlier, Tyler had shown up at my house uninvited with a disputed transfer document and expected access because he was my son.

Now he stood on the porch waiting.

I smiled.

“Come in.”

We cooked together.

That also felt new.

When Tyler lived at home as a teenager, he avoided kitchens unless food had badly.

“Those pieces are enormous.”

“They’ll cook.”

“Eventually.”

He pushed the cutting board toward smiling.

“Because that was before everything got complicated.”

“No.”

Tyler looked at me.

“It was before you knew it was complicated.”

He laughed softly.

“Right.”

We sat on the balcony.

Cars moved through the lot below.

A child bounced a basketball against a garage door.

Tyler looked embarrassed by the apartment.

I could tell.

“This place is ugly.”

“Yes.”

He laughed.

“You could lie.”

“I could.”

“Dad would’ve lied.”

“No. Your father would have said it had potential.”

“That is lying with optimism.”

“Exactly.”

We sat quietly.

Then Tyler said, “I’m scared people will know.”

“Know what?”

“The court progress.

“What did they say?”

“Karen said they might extend the consulting agreement if compliance approves.”

“Good.”

“Daniel said he’d recommend me.”

“Good.”

Tyler stared at the parking lot.

“I don’t deserve how nice Daniel has been.”

“Probably not.”

“Mom.”

“What?”

“You want me to say you do?”

He laughed.

“No.”

“Then don’t perhaps because every task no longer belonged to him by default.

There was something useful about being answerable to someone else.

He called one afternoon.

“I got corrected today.”

“For what?”

“I promised a client a timeline without checking operations.”

“What happened?”

“My manager support.”

“No. I am excellent support.”

He laughed.

The probation conditions required Tyler to complete community service.

He chose a workforce-development nonprofit that helped young men with job training.

At first, he treated the hours like punishment.

Then something shifted.

He started helping participants prepare for interviews.

One young man wanted to start a lawn service.

Tyler called me afterward.

“I wanted to tell him not to.”

“Why?”

“Because business ownership ruins lives.”

“That is not universally true.”

“I know.”

“What did you tell him?”

“To start with equipment he already owns.”

“Good.”

“No debt.”

“Good.”

“Get three paying talking and almost threw up.”

“Growth.”

“I’m beginning to hate that word too.”

The young man took his advice.

A month later, he had six clients.

No debt.

One used mower.

A handwritten ledger.

Tyler sounded prouder of that boy’s tiny operation than he ever sounded about his own biggest contracts.

That told me something.

Maybe he had begun to separate creation from scale.

At counseling, Jessica and Tyler made slower progress.

She did not trust apologies anymore.

She wanted behavior.

Shared financial passwords.

Credit reports pulled together.

No private loans.

No unilateral borrowing.

No assumptions.

Tyler agreed.

Then struggled with how exposed it made him feel.

He told me after one session.

“It feels like surveillance.”

“Maybe because secrecy was freedom for you.”

“That’s harsh.”

“True?”

He
