fell.

“I know.”

“That matters.”

“I know.”

“But it matters differently from forgery.”

Tyler nodded.

For the first time, I saw what accountability might actually look like.

Not turning someone into a monster.

Not excusing them because they were family.

Just naming each thing accurately.

My son had forged his father’s signature.

He had not forged his wife’s.

He had lied about both situations in different ways.

Those distinctions would not save his marriage.

But truth was finally becoming specific.

Before we separated, Tyler said, “Mom, GreenStone moved the closing date.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why?”

“The house loan showed up during their final financial review.”

“Does it affect the company sale?”

“Maybe.”

“When will we know?”

“Tomorrow.”

That evening, Karen Holt called Melissa.

GreenStone was still willing to close.

But they had changed one condition.

Because Tyler’s undisclosed borrowing and financial conduct created additional risk, part of his sale proceeds would be placed in escrow for eighteen months.

Tyler objected.

Daniel accepted immediately.

I had no reason to object.

Then Karen added a second condition.

Before closing, GreenStone wanted written confirmation that no other related-party loans, undisclosed guarantees, hidden accounts, or personal obligations existed.

Everyone had to sign.

Including me.

I looked at the certification.

For weeks, signatures had been the source of nearly every disaster.

This one asked us to state that everything was finally known.

I picked up my pen.

Then stopped.

“What happens if we sign and something else appears?”

Melissa looked at me.

“That is exactly why we should not sign until one final review is complete.”

I put the pen down.

For once, nobody rushed me.

<a
