Daniel could sue me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose are consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey would destroy everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe everything should not be preserved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes lifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019d really let Dad\u2019s company collapse?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was his too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he built it with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe invested in you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe believed in me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tyler\u2019s voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just wanted one chance to fix it before anyone found out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many years is one chance?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked away.<\/p>\n<p>Neither of us spoke for a while.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually the waiter came by.<\/p>\n<p>We ordered nothing.<\/p>\n<p>When he left, I asked one final question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did GreenStone come back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tyler swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey know we\u2019re struggling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you approach them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you are trying to sell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor five million?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe less after debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould the sale save the company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would pay everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd leave you with what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf William\u2019s twenty-five percent belongs to me, twenty-five percent of the equity is not yours to distribute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tyler\u2019s face hardened again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, please.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you assert ownership now, they\u2019ll freeze the deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen perhaps the deal should wait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand more every hour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He leaned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf GreenStone walks, the bank may come down on us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not a reason for me to pretend a forged document is genuine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not asking you to pretend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you asking?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He took a breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me complete the sale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd after?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll pay you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever is fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat phrase has already cost me enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked defeated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about the question.<\/p>\n<p>A week earlier, I would have said my money.<\/p>\n<p>Then my ownership.<\/p>\n<p>Then answers.<\/p>\n<p>Now I knew what I wanted first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m telling you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo more selective confession because you think I already discovered something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou will give Melissa the original company files you have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are things in there that have nothing to do with this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe can determine that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we are finished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tyler rose too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I picked up my purse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSit down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He obeyed.<\/p>\n<p>For once, instantly.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou forged William\u2019s signature. You used a false transfer to increase your ownership. You took distributions. You gave the bank information based on that ownership.
