of your business and nobody told me.”

Tyler’s voice sharpened.

“Dad wanted me to have it.”

“Then prove it.”

“I’m standing on your porch.”

“And I’m asking for proof.”

For several seconds, I heard nothing.

Then footsteps moved away.

I looked through the window.

Tyler returned to his truck.

But he didn’t leave.

He sat behind the wheel with the papers beside him.

Five minutes passed.

Then ten.

At the twelve-minute mark, my phone buzzed.

One photograph.

I opened it.

The document was titled Transfer of Membership Interest.

William’s name appeared at the bottom.

So did what looked like his signature.

For one second, relief hit me.

Then I enlarged the image.

The signature looked right.

Almost.

But something about the date bothered me.

The document claimed William signed it on March 18.

I knew that date.

Everyone in our family knew that week.

William had been in the hospital.

Not just visiting.

Admitted.

Sedated heavily after emergency surgery.

I stared at the date.

Then I opened my calendar records from that year.

March 18.

ICU.

The day I sat beside William for eleven hours while he drifted in and out of consciousness.

The day Tyler came by for less than thirty minutes.

The day William could barely hold a cup.

I looked again at the firm signature on Tyler’s document.

Then at my son’s truck outside.

For the first time, the question was no longer simply whether Tyler had hidden something.

It was whether the paper in his hands could possibly be what he claimed it was.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Document Carried My Husband’s Signature, but Its Date Led Straight Back
