operation.

But Silas had her passport and a flight reservation.

Either he planned to abduct her.

Or she had planned to flee with him.

The distinction mattered.

A lot.

“Does Caroline know?”

“We’re asking now.”

Ten minutes later, Agent Bell called again.

His tone answered before from the porch.

She saw my face.

“What happened?”

I told them.

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

I did not feel surprised anymore.

Only tired.

Caroline had not changed because she confessed.

She had adapted.

That difference mattered.

Agent Bell said the new evidence would affect any cooperation agreement.

I looked toward Harold’s letter.

Integrity isn’t never getting dirty.

It’s noticing the dirt before you start calling it skin.

Caroline had noticed.

Then planned to keep wearing it.

That was the difference.

I turned to Renee.

“You still considering the foundation?”

She nodded.

“More now.”

“Why?”

“Because people like Caroline know how to make damage look legitimate.”

I smiled faintly.

“That sounds like Harold.”

She folded the letter.

“Maybe he knew me too well.”

Daniel entered behind her.

He put one
