well.

Everyone wanted me to use power the way they would.

Seize it.

Threaten with it.

Trade it.

I had eighty-nine million dollars and had learned that possession was not the same thing as purpose.

I did not need nine hundred million more to prove anything.

“Surrender the certificate.”

Martin stared.

“To the government?”

“Yes.”

“You trust them?”

“No.”

Agent Bell raised an eyebrow.

I continued.

“I trust process more than secret families deciding everything privately.”

Caroline laughed bitterly.

“That sounds exactly like Harold.”

“I’m beginning to accept that.”

Martin’s shoulders dropped.

For the first time, he looked old.

Not clever.

Not dangerous.

Just exhausted.

“He wanted this,” Martin said.

“What?”

“For someone to refuse.”

My throat tightened.

“He told you?”

“Once.”

“When?”

“After Elias amended the trust.”

“What did he say?”

Martin looked directly into the camera.

“He said, ‘If you ever put Margaret in that chair, she’ll get up.’”

Daniel covered his mouth.

My eyes burned.

Of course.

Harold had known.

Not that I would accept power wisely.

That I would resent being handed it.

That resentment was the safeguard.

Martin placed the succession certificate on the table.

Caroline moved suddenly.

Her hand shot toward it.

Martin caught her wrist.

The camera shook.

Agents shouted through multiple lines.

Then another figure entered from off-screen.

Silas Price.

Alive.

He held a gun.

Everything stopped.

Martin released Caroline.

Silas pointed the weapon at him.

“Give me the certificate.”

Caroline stared.

“You.”

Silas smiled.

“Did you miss me?”

My stomach dropped.

Aaron had said Silas was gone.

Not dead.

Silas had waited.

While everyone fought over documents.

While Caroline confessed.

While Martin staged his grand ending.

He had found them.

His gun moved toward Caroline.

“Both of you sit.”

Martin obeyed.

Caroline did not.

“Silas.”

“Sit.”

She sat.

He looked into the camera.

Then he smiled directly at me.

“Margaret.”

I felt cold.

“You wanted to meet everyone.”

“I assure you I did not.”

He laughed.

“Here we are.”

His hand closed around the original succession certificate.

“If this makes you beneficiary, I suppose we finally have something worth negotiating.”

“No.”

His smile widened.

“No?”

“I don’t want it.”

“You will.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m about to give you a reason.”

He reached off camera.

Dragged someone into view.

Eleanor.

Her hands bound.

Blood at her temple.

Daniel stood so quickly his chair fell backward.

I stared at the screen.

Silas pressed the gun against Eleanor’s shoulder.

“Activate the trust,” he said.

“Or your friend dies.”

I looked at Eleanor.

She shook her head.

“No.”

Silas tightened his grip.

“You have ten minutes.”

And for the first time since winning eighty-nine million dollars, I faced a choice where money could not tell me what anything was worth.

Click here to continue reading: PART 29: Silas Thought Eleanor’s
