Eleanor, Eleanor gave it to Harold, and Harold refused to give it back.”

I turned toward the speaker.

“Eleanor.”

She sounded ashamed.

“He said no one in the Ward family should control it.”

That sounded exactly like him.

“Where is it?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did he hide it with the drives?”

“No.”

“Box?”

“No.”

“Samuel?”

“No.”

Keene said, “Harold told me once he put the code somewhere no banker would ever look.”

I closed my eyes.

Another Harold hiding place.

Ordinary.

Domestic.

Unimportant.

Somewhere no banker would look.

I thought of the old house.

Already searched.

The storage unit.

The workshop.

Photographs.

Recipe books.

Coffee tins.

Then memory surfaced.

Harold’s pie crust.

Not his.

Mine.

No.

Church cookbook.

Renee.

The cassette story from another world of memory—no, not ours.

I corrected myself.

Harold never baked.

But he did keep one thing nobody ever touched.

His gardening notebook.

Years of roses.

Tomatoes.

Soil mixtures.

Pruning dates.

No banker would look there.

“Daniel.”

He saw my face.

“What?”

“Your father’s garden book.”

His eyes widened.

“Do we still have it?”

I pictured a green cloth notebook.

Not in storage.

I had taken it to Daniel’s house after Harold died because I tried to keep his roses alive in pots.

Then I moved out.

My room had been emptied.

“Renee packed some things after I left.”

Daniel grabbed his phone.

Renee answered.

We described the notebook.

She went upstairs.

Closet.

Boxes.

Silence.

Then:

“I found it.”

My pulse jumped.

“Don’t open it.”

“Why?”

“Just don’t.”

Too late.

Paper rustled.

Renee said, “There’s writing inside the front cover.”

Everyone froze.

“What does it say?”

She read:

If red becomes green, plant the garden backward.

Below it was a sequence of numbers.

Keene whispered through the phone:

“That’s it.”

And somewhere outside my family, four hundred million dollars was already moving.

Click here to continue reading: PART 27: Harold Hid a Banking Override Inside His Gardening Notes, but Using It
