I understand consulting invoices for work nobody performed. I understand money crossing three companies before returning to the same people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence followed.<\/p>\n<p>Then Victor:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarold, you\u2019ve made your point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. My point is that Tom is being used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Even then, Harold had been defending Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had spent fifteen years believing Harold destroyed him.<\/p>\n<p>Harold had been trying to save him.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer said, \u201cThomas Avery signed every document voluntarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t make fraud legitimate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one said fraud occurred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered that laugh.<\/p>\n<p>Short.<\/p>\n<p>Disbelieving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou politicians really do learn how to say nothing with confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard glanced at me.<\/p>\n<p>Despite everything, I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>That was Harold.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer did not sound amused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe careful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor said, \u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording shifted.<\/p>\n<p>A chair scraped.<\/p>\n<p>Then Harold spoke again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anything happens to my family, everything I have goes somewhere you cannot retrieve it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer asked, \u201cIs that supposed to frighten me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s supposed to make Margaret boring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My eyes burned.<\/p>\n<p>Harold continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knows nothing. I was junior counsel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mercer participate?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot formally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInformally?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe attended one meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou met him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is why you knew the voice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped away from him.<\/p>\n<p>It was not betrayal.<\/p>\n<p>Not necessarily.<\/p>\n<p>But after Samuel, Thomas, Aaron, Silas, every withheld connection felt like a hand closing around my wrist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause until thirty seconds ago, I had no reason to connect an old client meeting to your husband\u2019s evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou recognized the name when we found Red Mesa?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor Hale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur Vale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSilas Price?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He held my gaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret, I am not hiding involvement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Shah said, \u201cWe\u2019ll verify that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That helped.<\/p>\n<p>Guilty people can ask to be verified too, but his willingness mattered.<\/p>\n<p>An officer approached.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAaron wants a lawyer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood,\u201d Shah said. \u201cGet him one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aaron looked back while they escorted him out.<\/p>\n<p>His expression had changed.<\/p>\n<p>The arrogance was gone.<\/p>\n<p>He looked afraid.<\/p>\n<p>Not of prison.<\/p>\n<p>Of the recording.<\/p>\n<p>That interested me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAaron knew what was on the drive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Richard shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew enough to want it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut not Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Shah considered that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he had known a sitting senator\u2019s voice was on it, his strategy might have been different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeaning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe might have destroyed the drive without trying to open it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was true.<\/p>\n<p>Curiosity had preserved the evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Or greed.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe both.<\/p>\n<p>We left the bank after sunset.<\/p>\n<p>The original drive traveled separately with law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>I hated watching it disappear into an evidence bag.<\/p>\n<p>Harold had protected it for fifteen years.<\/p>\n<p>Now strangers carried it away.<\/p>\n<p>Necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Still painful.<\/p>\n<p>At Willow Creek, Daniel was waiting.<\/p>\n<p>Renee and the children remained secure elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>He hugged me before asking anything.<\/p>\n<p>A week earlier, that would have surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>Now I simply held him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou okay?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cModerately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We sat at the kitchen table.<\/p>\n<p>Richard told him about Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel knew the name immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat senator?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad recorded him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad met a senator involved with criminals and never told us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought my father\u2019s biggest secret was that he hated your meatloaf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did not hate my meatloaf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe absolutely did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe ate two servings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo avoid hurting your feelings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are rewriting history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, the room became ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>Then Detective Shah called.<\/p>\n<p>She had listened to more files.<\/p>\n<p>Harold recorded three meetings.<\/p>\n<p>The first involved Victor and Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>The second involved Victor alone.<\/p>\n<p>The third was recorded years later.<\/p>\n<p>Two years before Harold died.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting Aaron mentioned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho\u2019s on it?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Mercer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSilas Price.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat were they discussing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRed Mesa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill operating?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard leaned closer to the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn what capacity?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDifferent companies.
