with me.

With me.

Not address.

Initials.

H + M.

Harold and Margaret.

I remembered the note he wrote on our first anniversary.

Wherever M is, H is home.

Corny.

I mocked him for years.

Then he repeated it every anniversary.

One promise.

Never broke.

I looked at the keyboard.

“Try HMHome.”

Aaron typed.

Wrong.

My heart pounded.

Maybe punctuation.

Maybe year.

Our wedding year.

1978.

“H-M-Home-1978.”

He typed.

The laptop paused.

Then the screen changed.

Folders appeared.

Aaron inhaled sharply.

I was right.

Harold’s files opened.

For one second, nobody moved.

Then an audio file began automatically.

My husband’s voice filled the room.

Not sick.

Strong.

Recorded years earlier.

“Victor, if you’re hearing this outside my presence, then somebody has ignored the arrangement.”

Aaron lunged for the laptop.

Richard moved at the same time.

Then everything happened too quickly.

A door behind us crashed open.

Police shouted.

Aaron grabbed the flash drive.

I saw metal in his other hand.

Not a gun.

A small knife.

Richard pulled me backward.

Aaron swung toward the side exit.

Officers flooded the room.

“Drop it!”

Aaron ran.

He hit the stairwell door.

An officer caught his arm.

The knife fell.

The flash drive skittered across the floor.

I watched the red dot spin once.

Twice.

Then stop beside my shoe.

Aaron went down under two officers.

His face struck the dusty floor.

He shouted something about warrants.

Rights.

Evidence.

I barely heard him.

I bent slowly.

Detective Shah stopped me.

“Don’t touch.”

Of course.

Evidence.

Again.

The laptop remained open.

Harold’s recording continued.

Victor’s voice entered.

“I gave you my word, Briggs.”

Harold answered:

“I trust your fear more than your word.”

Then another voice spoke.

A third man.

Calm.

Cultured.

Unfamiliar.

“You’re making this unnecessarily difficult.”

Harold replied:

“No. I’m making it permanent.”

Detective Shah stared at the screen.

Richard whispered, “Who is that?”

The recording continued.

Victor said:

“You shouldn’t have brought him.”

The third man answered:

“He already knows.”

Harold:

“I know enough.”

Then the third man said a name.

His own.

And Richard went completely still.

I looked at him.

“What?”

His face had gone pale.

“You know him?”

He nodded slowly.

“Margaret.”

“What?”

“That man isn’t a banker anymore.”

“Then what is he?”

Richard looked toward Detective Shah.

Then back at me.

“He’s a United States senator.”
