called Red Mesa Strategies was investigating his role.<\/p>\n<p>Elena photographed every page.<\/p>\n<p>Further back, we found a letter.<\/p>\n<p>Not from Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>From someone named Victor Hale.<\/p>\n<p>I did not recognize him.<\/p>\n<p>The letter was terse.<\/p>\n<p>Harold\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Your concerns have been noted. Tom is under significant pressure and does not fully understand the consequences of further interference. I strongly suggest you discontinue contacting investors.<\/p>\n<p>No company letterhead.<\/p>\n<p>No address.<\/p>\n<p>Just a signature.<\/p>\n<p>Victor Hale.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like a threat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Dad tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That hurt.<\/p>\n<p>Not because Harold had hidden money.<\/p>\n<p>Because he had hidden danger.<\/p>\n<p>I continued reading.<\/p>\n<p>Attached was Harold\u2019s handwritten note.<\/p>\n<p>Spoke with V.H. by phone. Claims to represent private funding source. Refuses documentation. Told him I will advise anyone who asks me honestly. Tom furious.<\/p>\n<p>Another page.<\/p>\n<p>V.H. connected to R.M.? Search later.<\/p>\n<p>There was no later page.<\/p>\n<p>At least not in that folder.<\/p>\n<p>We searched the rest of the box.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel found a small envelope taped inside the folder\u2019s back cover.<\/p>\n<p>My name was written on it.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Harold\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Not recent.<\/p>\n<p>The ink had faded slightly.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel did not touch it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat on an old dining chair.<\/p>\n<p>My fingers trembled when I opened the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was one sheet.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret\u2014<\/p>\n<p>If this folder ever matters again, something has gone very wrong.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel crouched beside me.<\/p>\n<p>I kept reading.<\/p>\n<p>Tom thinks I ruined him. I did not. His project was being used to move money through inflated land purchases and consulting contracts. I found enough to know I wanted no part of it and enough to frighten the people behind it.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Elena.<\/p>\n<p>She was already calling Detective Shah.<\/p>\n<p>The letter continued.<\/p>\n<p>A man named Victor Hale tried to pressure me into silence. I gave copies of what I had to someone I trusted. If anyone ever comes asking about Red Mesa, do not answer questions alone.
