Why go there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo frighten her,\u201d Renee said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d Elena replied. \u201cBut also possibly to confirm biography.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat biography?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere Margaret lived. Who visited. Neighbors. Patterns. Connections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt violated in a way the attempted bank transfer had not produced.<\/p>\n<p>Money could be protected.<\/p>\n<p>Accounts could be frozen.<\/p>\n<p>But my past had no password.<\/p>\n<p>Richard returned to his list.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho from your old life knew about the lottery?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot after the fact. I think you\u2019re desperate.<\/p>\n<p>That sentence returned with surprising clarity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Thomas had already invested heavily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard asked, \u201cAnd wanted Harold to join?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assumed because they were friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Shah leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr because he needed new money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The possibility felt unpleasant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas stopped visiting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarold ever mention him again?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRarely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember Dad saying Tom lost everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t remember that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was complaining about a bad investment in my retirement account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He rubbed his jaw.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad said something like, \u2018At least you didn\u2019t do what Tom did and chase losses until there was nothing left.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard wrote rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFull name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas Avery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Shah made a call.<\/p>\n<p>We waited.<\/p>\n<p>The room felt too quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Finally she returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas Avery, sixty-nine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My breath caught.<\/p>\n<p>Close to my age.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAddress?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo current Arizona residence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNevada.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLas Vegas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That did not mean anything.<\/p>\n<p>Millions of people lived there.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the room changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinancial history?\u201d Richard asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBankruptcy eleven years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat fits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything criminal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing obvious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective continued reading.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCivil judgment related to investor misrepresentation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked up sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat type?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReal-estate partnership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Harold had been right.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe more right than I understood.<\/p>\n<p>Elena asked, \u201cCurrent employment?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsulting.
