You can help her understand.<\/p>\n<p>No police.<\/p>\n<p>No lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>No games.<\/p>\n<p>Five hundred thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Instructions tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>Cooperate and your family stays private.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel watched me read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is because of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He immediately corrected himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. That came out wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s because of the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot because I told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But I saw guilt anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Parents and children are very good at inheriting each other\u2019s guilt.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Shah photographed everything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not respond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel laughed without humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone keeps saying that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause people respond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard stood near the fireplace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive hundred thousand is low.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor someone who believes they\u2019re targeting an eighty-nine-million-dollar winner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like plenty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is plenty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s calibrated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeaning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey want an amount large enough to matter, small enough that you might pay quickly rather than involve law enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Shah nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgreed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re talking like this person has done it before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>That was answer enough.<\/p>\n<p>Elena said, \u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked at the message again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat bothers me more is the phrasing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I reread it.<\/p>\n<p>Cooperate and your family stays private.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey aren\u2019t only threatening harm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExposure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt a chill.<\/p>\n<p>He continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomebody understands that privacy itself matters to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone could guess that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the sequence is specific.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard counted it out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey identify Margaret. They identify property. They attempt access to funds. They contact her. Then they contact you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Shah added, \u201cThey\u2019re learning what pressure works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds worse when you say shades.<\/p>\n<p>Elena screened every delivery worker.<\/p>\n<p>I hated that.<\/p>\n<p>Not because she was wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Because she was necessary.<\/p>\n<p>At five, Renee brought the children protection had replaced it.<\/p>\n<p>Another kind of barrier.<\/p>\n<p>I did not want money turning every relationship into strategy.<\/p>\n<p>We ate pizza.<\/p>\n<p>Not roast chicken.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody discussed the extortion while the children were present.<\/p>\n<p>At eight, Daniel took them home.<\/p>\n<p>Renee stayed behind.<\/p>\n<p>She washed dishes again.<\/p>\n<p>I joined exactly what I was afraid of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I hate that you had reason to be afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not comfort us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>Both of us froze.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>I called Detective Shah before opening it.<\/p>\n<p>She arrived on speaker with Elena.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRead it aloud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened the message.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>10:00 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>Bring five hundred thousand in negotiable bearer bonds.<\/p>\n<p>Union Station locker 214.<\/p>\n<p>Come alone.<\/p>\n<p>No trackers.<\/p>\n<p>No police.<\/p>\n<p>No cleverness.<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBearer bonds?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard, listening from another line, swore quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t work like movies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNegotiable bearer bonds in that form are uncommon and difficult to obtain quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Shah said, \u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Renee frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo whoever sent this doesn\u2019t know finance?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard sounded thoughtful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr they\u2019re trying to sound like someone who doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hated that possibility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo disguise sophistication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Shah asked me not to reply.<\/p>\n<p>They would prepare an alternative.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the locker number.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnion Station is public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood for surveillance,\u201d Elena said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd bad if something goes wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Renee touched my arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Shah said, \u201cWe may use an undercover substitute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That relieved everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Except something bothered me.<\/p>\n<p>The wording.<\/p>\n<p>Come alone.<\/p>\n<p>No cleverness.<\/p>\n<p>It felt personal.<\/p>\n<p>Not in the way strangers sometimes make threats personal.<\/p>\n<p>More intimate.<\/p>\n<p>As if someone knew exactly how stubborn I could be.<\/p>\n<p>Then Richard asked a question that made the room fall silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret, who knows you hate being called clever?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me once Harold used to tease you for being \u2018too clever for your own good.\u2019 You said you hated the phrase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Renee looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve heard you say that too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had heard it.<\/p>\n<p>Renee.<\/p>\n<p>Old friends.<\/p>\n<p>Family.<\/p>\n<p>People who had known me before the money.<\/p>\n<p>The extortionist\u2019s language suddenly looked less generic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould be coincidence,\u201d Detective Shah said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hated the word.<\/p>\n<p>Then another message arrived.<\/p>\n<p>This one contained a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>At first, I did not understand what I was seeing.<\/p>\n<p>Then my stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>It was my old house.<\/p>\n<p>The one Harold and I had sold.<\/p>\n<p>The photograph showed the front porch.<\/p>\n<p>Yellow kitchen curtains visible through the window.<\/p>\n<p>The rose bushes Harold planted.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath the photograph were four words.<\/p>\n<p>You remember this place.<\/p>\n<p>Renee whispered, \u201cOh my God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could not speak.<\/p>\n<p>No stranger researching a lottery winner would automatically know what that house meant.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had not merely found me after eighty-nine million dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had known me before it.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a
