At first, carrying them can make you feel strong. Eventually you stop noticing they\u2019re bending your back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the letter in her hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wish your husband had told you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if you would have argued?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEspecially then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She folded the note carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI might have been furious. I might have given money to Diane anyway. But Harold died believing he had to protect me from my own choices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes moved to the trunk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish he had trusted me enough to risk disagreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words lodged somewhere uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>I thought about Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Had I been protecting myself?<\/p>\n<p>Yes.<\/p>\n<p>But was I also withholding information because I distrusted what he might become?<\/p>\n<p>Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Those were not the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>By noon, Eleanor and Peter prepared to leave with the trunk.<\/p>\n<p>Before she went, she handed me the brass key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis belongs to the room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She closed my fingers around it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything else comes with me. The key stays with the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I accepted it.<\/p>\n<p>Peter carried the trunk to the car.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor stopped beside the porch swing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope my family didn\u2019t interrupt your first weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I glanced through the open door at Daniel and Renee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou may have improved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She kissed my cheek.<\/p>\n<p>Then she whispered, \u201cTell them before the money becomes the only story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I watched their car leave.<\/p>\n<p>When I turned back, Daniel was standing in the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much did you hear?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I studied him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReally?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, I\u2019m trying to respect your privacy, remember?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stepped onto the porch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was strange.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad would\u2019ve loved that workshop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked toward the garage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI miss him more lately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not expect that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy lately?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know. Maybe you moving out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat on the swing.<\/p>\n<p>He sat beside me.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, neither spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cWhen Dad died, I thought moving you in was the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a while, it was exactly what I needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we messed it up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He accepted the answer.<\/p>\n<p>I was grateful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I started seeing you as part of the system,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe system?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchool. Food. House. Kids.
