Now their metal edges pressed sharply into my skin while I watched the empty street.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had no business nearby.<\/p>\n<p>His office was twelve miles east.<\/p>\n<p>His home was almost twenty minutes south.<\/p>\n<p>Willow Creek Lane was not a shortcut between either place.<\/p>\n<p>The obvious explanation was also the one I least wanted.<\/p>\n<p>He had come because of the house.<\/p>\n<p>I stood and went inside.<\/p>\n<p>The rooms were still empty enough to carry every footstep from one end of the first floor to the other. Eleanor\u2019s curtains were gone. Pale rectangles remained where photographs had hung. In the kitchen, the faint smell of lemon cleaner mixed with old wood.<\/p>\n<p>I walked to the front window and moved behind the wall beside it.<\/p>\n<p>Ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p>I was seventy-one years old, hiding in my own house.<\/p>\n<p>Harold would have laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust answer the door if he comes back,\u201d I murmured.<\/p>\n<p>As if summoned by the sentence, the sound of an engine approached.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s truck passed again.<\/p>\n<p>Slower this time.<\/p>\n<p>I saw his face through the windshield.<\/p>\n<p>He was looking directly at the house.<\/p>\n<p>Then he continued to the end of the street.<\/p>\n<p>I let the curtain fall.<\/p>\n<p>My phone was on the kitchen counter.<\/p>\n<p>I picked it up and considered calling him first.<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>If he wanted to know something, he could ask.<\/p>\n<p>I had spent too many years volunteering answers before anyone earned them.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty minutes passed.<\/p>\n<p>I opened cabinets, measured the refrigerator space, and made a list of things I would need immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Coffee maker.<\/p>\n<p>Bed.<\/p>\n<p>Towels.<\/p>\n<p>Saucepan.<\/p>\n<p>Chair for the porch.<\/p>\n<p>Then I crossed out the last one.<\/p>\n<p>I already had Eleanor\u2019s swing.<\/p>\n<p>I was standing in the pantry when someone knocked.<\/p>\n<p>Three firm taps.<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes briefly.<\/p>\n<p>Then I walked to the front door.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood on the porch.<\/p>\n<p>His hands were empty.<\/p>\n<p>His expression was not angry.<\/p>\n<p>That made the encounter more difficult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>He stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He glanced past me into the house.<\/p>\n<p>Then back toward the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could have lied.<\/p>\n<p>The temptation lasted perhaps one second.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI live here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI bought the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face emptied.<\/p>\n<p>Not changed.<\/p>\n<p>Emptied.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, he appeared unable to decide which question to ask first.<\/p>\n<p>Finally he said, \u201cThis house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWillow Creek?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou bought Willow Creek Lane?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe we\u2019ve established that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His mouth opened.<\/p>\n<p>Closed.<\/p>\n<p>He turned and looked toward the yard as if checking whether he had accidentally arrived at another address.<\/p>\n<p>Then he laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>Not because anything was funny.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re serious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sale closed today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked back at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned against the doorframe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe usual way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith a contract, inspection, title work, signatures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow could you afford this place?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was again.<\/p>\n<p>Not congratulations.<\/p>\n<p>Not immediately.<\/p>\n<p>How could you afford it?<\/p>\n<p>I reminded myself that the question was reasonable.<\/p>\n<p>As far as Daniel knew, I was living on retirement savings and the remnants of the house Harold and I had sold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you I was comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComfortable doesn\u2019t buy this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently it does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Dad leave you money I don\u2019t know about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you borrow against something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA mortgage?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked startled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou paid cash?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word seemed to strike him physically.<\/p>\n<p>He took one step backward.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, suspicion entered his expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, where did the money come from?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened the door wider.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou may come inside if we\u2019re going to have this conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then entered.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes traveled through the living room.<\/p>\n<p>He knew the house well.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered him standing there during the original showing, describing where Renee\u2019s piano would go.<\/p>\n<p>He had imagined Christmas beside the fireplace.<\/p>\n<p>He had measured the wall for his television.<\/p>\n<p>Now those rooms belonged to me.<\/p>\n<p>The irony hung between us, but I refused to point at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat buyer fell through,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy agent knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had an agent?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince when?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince I decided to buy a house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He rubbed his forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou decided yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I watched him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI decided I needed my own home yesterday. Buying one happened quickly because I had already spent considerable time thinking about what I wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was true.<\/p>\n<p>My lottery win had forced me to imagine possibilities long before Daniel\u2019s dinner-table question.<\/p>\n<p>He walked toward the fireplace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew we wanted this house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His back stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>The danger arrived there.<\/p>\n<p>Not money.<\/p>\n<p>Betrayal.<\/p>\n<p>He turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why this one?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I like it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could buy anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo could you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe couldn\u2019t buy this one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s my point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Daniel. Your point seems to be that because you once wanted this property, I should have excluded it from my choices forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen explain what would be fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He paced once across the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know. Maybe telling me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore I bought my home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at me as if the answer were obvious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause we spent months trying to get this place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you knew what it meant to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt something painful move beneath my ribs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did my room in your house mean to me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That stopped him.<\/p>\n<p>I had not planned to say it.<\/p>\n<p>The question simply came.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice stayed calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stood silent.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not saying that to punish you. I am telling you because you\u2019re asking me to treat your attachment to a house with more seriousness than you treated my attachment to having one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>He sat on the edge of the empty fireplace hearth.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since entering, he looked less like an offended buyer and more like my son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know you felt that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t ask.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The admission surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>He rubbed both hands over his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sound awful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sound shocked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am shocked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked around again.<\/p>\n<p>Then something occurred to him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas this why you weren\u2019t upset?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt dinner?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you knew you could just buy a better place?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was upset. I simply chose not to perform it for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That hurt him more than anger would have.<\/p>\n<p>I saw it.<\/p>\n<p>He nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was beginning to realize that adulthood does not end the old reflex of wanting your child to feel better.<\/p>\n<p>I almost comforted him.<\/p>\n<p>Then I stopped myself.<\/p>\n<p>Not every discomfort requires rescue.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, I need to ask again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout the money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>He lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs something going on?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, did you sell investments? Did somebody give you money? Are you involved in something risky?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the circumstances, I nearly smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you think I joined organized crime between Thursday and Friday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m serious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo am I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He crossed his arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou paid cash for a house we couldn\u2019t qualify for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean I committed a crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means there\u2019s something you haven\u2019t told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was right.<\/p>\n<p>That was the problem.<\/p>\n<p>I walked to the front window.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, sunlight had begun turning the street gold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have private financial matters, Daniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince when are your finances private from me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince always.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He flinched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe used to talk about everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You helped after your father died. That is not the same as having permanent access to every decision I make.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not asking for access.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re asking for an accounting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m worried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr about this house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s unfair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerhaps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence stretched between us.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel said something I did not expect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came here because the realtor called me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat realtor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTom Henderson.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The listing agent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Tom call you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked embarrassed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMonths ago, when our offer failed, I told him to contact me if anything changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the original buyer defaulted?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe called yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Before my offer was accepted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat the deal had fallen apart and another cash offer arrived almost immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I kept my expression still.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said the sellers took it because the buyer could close fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd today?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe called because closing was finished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat seems unusual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked him to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel gave a humorless smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI drove over because I wanted to see who bought it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you found your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, the absurdity became impossible to ignore.<\/p>\n<p>We both laughed.<\/p>\n<p>His laughter faded first.<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked at me with a kind of wounded curiosity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know I might find out today?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere you going to tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was ready.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat keeps being your answer lately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it\u2019s true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He studied me.<\/p>\n<p>Then his expression softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs this about us asking you to leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot entirely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat part is?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought carefully before answering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing asked to leave reminded me that I never want my security to depend on whether another person finds me convenient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish I could undo that dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you can decide what happens after it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked toward the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll need furniture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve noticed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can help move things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I can help buy things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That made me smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I can manage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight.
