quickly that Lily jumped.

Then she smiled.

“Grandma.”

“What are you doing here?”

She held up my tablet.

“You forgot this.”

I stared at it.

The tablet was old.

I used it mostly for recipes, reading, and photographs.

Recently, however, Richard’s office had sent several messages to the email account connected to it.

My stomach tightened.

“Does your father know you’re here?”

Lily shifted the purple backpack on her shoulder.

“He knows I left.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

She looked guilty.

“Mrs. Chen brought me.”

Mrs. Chen lived three houses from Daniel and often drove Lily to weekend activities.

“Does your father know Mrs. Chen brought you here?”

“Not exactly.”

“Lily.”

“I told him I was going to Maya’s.”

“That is very different.”

“I know.”

She stared at her shoes.

“But Dad said he’d bring your tablet next week, and I wanted to see you now.”

My irritation disappeared.

I stepped aside.

“Come in.”

She entered and looked around.

“This is small.”

I laughed.

“Thank you for the architectural review.”

“I didn’t mean bad small.”

“I know.”

She wandered toward the window.

“Where’s your stuff?”

“Most of it is stored.”

“You don’t have much.”

“I have enough.”

Her eyes found the ceramic bird on the kitchen counter.

“You brought it.”

“Of course.”

She picked it up.

“You kept this?”

“For four years.”

“It’s ugly.”

“It’s magnificent.”

“The wings don’t match.”

“Real birds rarely ask me for symmetry.”

She laughed.

That sound filled the apartment more completely than any furniture could.

Then she became serious.

“I’m sorry Dad made you leave.”

I sat beside her.

“Your father didn’t make me do anything.”

“He asked you to.”

“Yes.”

“That’s the same thing.”

“Not quite.”

She frowned.

“Are you defending him?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“I’m making sure you don’t carry an adult problem that belongs to adults.”

Her fingers tightened around the bird.

“Mom said everybody misunderstood.”

“What did you misunderstand?”

She looked at me.

“I thought you lived with us because you wanted to.”

“I did.”

“And now?”

“Now I want something different.”

“Because Dad hurt you?”

There was no easy answer.

“Partly.”

She nodded as though she appreciated the honesty.

Then she hugged me.

“I miss you.”

“I miss you too.”

We stayed like that until my shoulder began complaining.

When she pulled away, she remembered the tablet.

“Oh.”

She handed it over.

“It kept making noises this morning.”

My pulse quickened.

“What noises?”

“Email noises.”

“Did you open anything?”

“No.”

She looked offended.

“I know your password, but I don’t read your messages.”

I believed her.

Then she added, “Dad almost did.”

My fingers stopped.

“What?”

“He picked it up when it dinged.”

“What happened?”

“I told him it was yours.”

“And?”

“He put it on the counter.”

“Did he see the screen?”

She shrugged.

“Maybe the notification.”

I turned the tablet over.

The lock screen showed several alerts.

Most were harmless.

One was from Laura Jensen.

INSPECTION CONFIRMED — WILLOW CREEK LANE.

My heartbeat stumbled.

Had Daniel seen it?

“Grandma?”

I forced myself to relax.

“Yes?”

“Are you okay?”

“Fine.”

She narrowed her eyes.

Children notice the things adults work hardest to conceal.

“You looked weird.”

“At seventy-one, I’m entitled to look weird occasionally.”

That earned another laugh.

I made tea for myself and hot chocolate for her.

We sat at the tiny table.

“Where are you going after this apartment?” she asked.

“I’m buying a house.”

Her face brightened.

“You are?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“I’m not telling yet.”

“Why?”

“Because it isn’t officially mine.”

“Can I have a room?”

The question hit me unexpectedly.

“You already have a room.”

“At your house.”

I looked down at my tea.

The Willow Creek property had four bedrooms.

One could easily belong to visiting grandchildren.

“Yes.”

Her whole face changed.

“Really?”

“A guest room.”

“My guest room.”

“If you behave.”

“I behave.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“Usually.”

“Better.”

She leaned forward.

“Can Noah have one too?”

“If he visits.”

“He will.”

“How do you know?”

“Because he misses you.”

“He barely said anything.”

“He’s fourteen. Saying things makes him uncomfortable.”

That sounded accurate.

Lily drank her cocoa.

Then she asked, “Will Dad be allowed to visit?”

I almost choked on my tea.

“Of course.”

“Mom too?”

“Yes.”

She studied me.

“You’re not very good at staying mad.”

“I’m excellent at staying mad.”

“No, you aren’t.”

I smiled despite myself.

Perhaps she knew me better than I knew myself.

The apartment buzzer sounded.

I expected Mrs. Chen.

Instead, the receptionist said a man named Daniel Foster was downstairs.

Lily’s eyes widened.

“Oh.”

“You think?”

She slid lower in the chair.

“How did he find me?”

“You probably told Mrs. Chen the apartment number.”

“I did.”

“And Mrs. Chen probably possesses common sense.”

“Oh.”

I pressed the intercom.

“Send him up.”

Three minutes later, Daniel knocked.

When I opened the door, his expression moved through relief, frustration, and embarrassment almost simultaneously.

“Lily.”

She lifted one hand.

“Hi, Dad.”

“Do you have any idea how worried I was?”

“I texted.”

“You texted after you left.”

“I brought Grandma’s tablet.”

“That could have waited.”

“I couldn’t.”

His voice softened.

“Why?”

“Because I missed her.”

Daniel went still.

So did I.

Lily looked between us.

“You both make everything too complicated.”

Then she picked up her backpack.

“I’m ready.”

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“We’ll discuss this at home.”

“I figured.”

She hugged me again.

“Don’t forget my room.”

Daniel heard that.

“What room?”

Lily smiled innocently.

“Nothing.”

“Lily.”

“Grandma’s buying a house.”

Daniel looked at me.

I had not intended to tell him yet.

“A house?”

“I’m looking.”

“You just moved yesterday.”

“I’m efficient.”

“Mom.”

“What?”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“I haven’t decided.”

That was technically no longer true.

I disliked the lie immediately.

So I corrected it.

“I’ve made an offer.”

His eyebrows rose.

“Already?”

“Yes.”

“With what?”

The question escaped before he could stop it.

He flushed.

“I didn’t mean—”

“With money, generally.”

Lily laughed.

Daniel did not.

“I mean, can you afford this?”

“I wouldn’t make an offer otherwise.”

“You told me your savings had to last.”

“You told me that.”

He looked confused.

For a second, I wondered whether this was the moment.

Tell him.

End the secrecy.

But then I imagined every conversation afterward.

Eighty-nine million dollars sitting between us.

I was not ready.

“I’m comfortable, Daniel.”

He nodded slowly.

“Okay.”

His gaze moved around the apartment.

Then to the tablet.

“By the way, you had some notifications.”

“I noticed.”

“I didn’t open them.”

Relief came quickly.

“Thank you.”

“One mentioned an inspection.”

There it was.

He had seen it.

I kept my expression neutral.

“Most houses get inspected before purchase.”

“I know.”

He smiled faintly.

“I hope it goes well.”

“Thank you.”

No recognition.

He had not noticed the address.

Or, if he had, it meant nothing yet.

Lily tugged his sleeve.

“Can we go?”

“In a minute.”

She sighed dramatically.

Daniel turned back to me.

“Mom, I meant what I said on the phone.”

“I know.”

“I handled dinner badly.”

“Yes.”

He winced.

I softened my voice.

“But you’re trying now.”

“I am.”

“Then keep trying.”

He nodded.

It was not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But it was a door left unlocked.

After they left, I opened the tablet.

Laura had sent inspection details.

Richard had sent revised ownership documents.

Another message contained the accepted offer.

I read everything carefully.

Then I called Richard.

“Small problem.”

He listened while I explained the tablet.

“Did Daniel see the address?”

“I don’t think so.”

“Would it matter if he did?”

“I’m not sure.”

“That means it probably would.”

“I want the house to become mine before anyone turns it into a family argument.”

“Reasonable.”

He paused.

“Then we continue exactly as planned.”

Tuesday morning arrived bright and dry.

I met Laura outside Willow Creek Lane.

Seeing the house in person after making the offer felt entirely different.

The porch looked deeper.

The trees taller.

The front door was painted a muted blue.

The swing moved slightly in the breeze.

A woman waited beside it.

She was perhaps five years older than me, dressed in cream trousers and a loose green blouse.

“Margaret?”

“Yes.”

“I’m Eleanor Carter.”

We shook hands.

Then she looked at me with an expression I recognized immediately.

The expression of someone saying goodbye before she was ready.

“You love the swing,” she said.

I smiled.

“I do.”

“My husband built it.”

That surprised me.

“He did?”

“Badly.”

I laughed.

“So did mine.”

Something changed between us.

She touched the railing.

“We raised three children here.”

She told me about birthday parties in the backyard, Christmas mornings, broken windows, grandchildren learning to ride bicycles, and her husband Harold working in the garage.

I stared at her.

“Your husband was named Harold?”

She smiled.

“Yes.”

“So was mine.”

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

“Then perhaps the house knows what it’s doing,” she said.

The inspector arrived soon afterward.

Roof.

Foundation.

Electrical system.

Plumbing.

Air conditioning.

Nothing catastrophic.

A few repairs.

Normal age.

While the others worked, Eleanor and I walked through the backyard.

She showed me where tomatoes grew best.

Where afternoon shade reached first.

Where her husband once attempted to build a birdhouse and accidentally nailed it to his workbench.

I laughed until my eyes watered.

“You should keep the workshop,” she said.

“I intend to.”

“And the swing?”

“If you truly want to leave it.”

“I
