I\u2019ll sign it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaking him talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale said, \u201cYou have little left to offer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark answered, \u201cThat\u2019s not true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went still.<\/p>\n<p>Vale paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you have?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at Emma.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>Something passed through his face.<\/p>\n<p>Decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s another copy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale\u2019s voice sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father\u2019s boat recording.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat boat recording?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Mark continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad installed a cockpit recorder after the first insurance dispute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane had never mentioned one.<\/p>\n<p>Crowe had never mentioned one.<\/p>\n<p>The police had never found one.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Mark.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears before he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell anyone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was destroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale\u2019s silence had become heavier.<\/p>\n<p>Mark continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter Dad died, Mom said the recording unit was lost with the boat electronics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma whispered, \u201cShe lied?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think she knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad kept remote backups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale spoke suddenly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>Real fear.<\/p>\n<p>Mark heard it too.<\/p>\n<p>He leaned toward the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale recovered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re bluffing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy do you care if Crowe told the truth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vale hung up.<\/p>\n<p>The room erupted into motion.<\/p>\n<p>The detective ordered an immediate search for records tied to Mark\u2019s father\u2019s old electronics.<\/p>\n<p>Emma looked at Mark.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs there really a backup?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark turned toward us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father told me he was experimenting with remote storage on company servers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you lied to Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled despite everything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark gave me a broken, exhausted look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the detective was already focused elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVale\u2019s reaction matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe believes a recording could exist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich means Crowe\u2019s version may be incomplete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma looked terrified.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat could be worse?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one answered.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mark\u2019s phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>A message.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>One line.<\/p>\n<p>YOU SHOULD HAVE LET YOUR FATHER\u2019S RECORDING STAY BURIED.<\/p>\n<p>Mark showed us.<\/p>\n<p>A second message followed.<\/p>\n<p>THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING.<\/p>\n<p>Then a third.<\/p>\n<p>Not from Vale.<\/p>\n<p>Not from Lane.<\/p>\n<p>The number traced immediately to a prepaid phone activated thirty minutes earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The message contained a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>A server room.<\/p>\n<p>Rows of old equipment.<\/p>\n<p>One rack marked with the logo of Halden Manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>Below the photograph:<\/p>\n<p>I FOUND THE BACKUP.<\/p>\n<p>Emma whispered, \u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A final message appeared.<\/p>\n<p>COME ALONE IF YOU WANT TO HEAR WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO YOUR FATHER.<\/p>\n<p>Signed with two initials.<\/p>\n<p>A.M.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur Morrow.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=29543\">Click here to continue reading: PART 21: Morrow\u2019s Server Photograph Forced Mark Back Into His Father\u2019s Last Days, Where a Forgotten Password Opened More Than a Recording<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Richard Vale finally called me himself at 9:17 that night.
