DO NOT CONTACT HIM.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next message took longer.<\/p>\n<p>BECAUSE LANE IS THE ONE PERSON VALE NEVER THREATENED.<\/p>\n<p>That sentence changed the room.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone else had a weakness.<\/p>\n<p>Diane\u2019s company.<\/p>\n<p>David\u2019s gambling.<\/p>\n<p>James\u2019s debts.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer\u2019s complicity.<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s criminal exposure.<\/p>\n<p>Morrow\u2019s early financing.<\/p>\n<p>But Peter Lane?<\/p>\n<p>No coercion.<\/p>\n<p>No leverage.<\/p>\n<p>If Mercer was right, Lane had participated because he wanted to.<\/p>\n<p>We dug deeper.<\/p>\n<p>Lane had signed legal opinions during the old Bennett-Halden financing.<\/p>\n<p>Lane had reviewed the insurance structure on Mark\u2019s father.<\/p>\n<p>Lane had advised the events company used to arrange my introduction.<\/p>\n<p>Lane had incorporated Clearwater Advisory for David.<\/p>\n<p>Lane had also reviewed the private bank agreement for Diane\u2019s safe-deposit box.<\/p>\n<p>He touched everything.<\/p>\n<p>Quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Never visibly enough to become the center.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of my father\u2019s description of Arthur Morrow.<\/p>\n<p>Forgettable.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the more dangerous person had been even easier to ignore.<\/p>\n<p>The detective called Lane\u2019s listed residence.<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>Office.<\/p>\n<p>Closed.<\/p>\n<p>Cellphone.<\/p>\n<p>Off.<\/p>\n<p>Travel records showed a flight booked for that night.<\/p>\n<p>Destination: Zurich.<\/p>\n<p>My father stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Federal authorities were notified.<\/p>\n<p>The reservation was flagged.<\/p>\n<p>But twenty minutes later, airline security reported Lane never checked in.<\/p>\n<p>Another diversion.<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>I answered on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>A man said, \u201cSophie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I recognized the voice from years of legal meetings.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Lane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe people are giving you an inaccurate picture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the detective.<\/p>\n<p>He gestured to keep talking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat picture would you prefer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot on the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFunny.
