Insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me if I accused him, he would make it look like your father had staged his death to escape debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou believed him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I was afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>The excuse that had powered half the story.<\/p>\n<p>Not fake fear.<\/p>\n<p>Not trivial fear.<\/p>\n<p>Real fear used to justify disastrous choices.<\/p>\n<p>Diane continued.<\/p>\n<p>She kept copies.<\/p>\n<p>Not enough to prove murder.<\/p>\n<p>Enough to show Vale had motive and financial exposure.<\/p>\n<p>She spent seven years trying to survive beside the man she suspected had helped kill her husband.<\/p>\n<p>Then she became like him.<\/p>\n<p>That was the part she did not say.<\/p>\n<p>She did not have to.<\/p>\n<p>Emma said it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou kept telling yourself one more bad choice would save us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane looked at her daughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd eventually there was nothing left to save.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane began crying again.<\/p>\n<p>This time nobody moved toward her.<\/p>\n<p>The detective entered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have an update.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNathan Crowe is talking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is he saying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe admits he was on the boat with your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma gripped her chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says the death was not planned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane whispered, \u201cHe\u2019s lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCrowe says they fought over documents. Your father fell, struck his head, and went overboard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Crowe try to save him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says Vale ordered him to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma began crying without sound.<\/p>\n<p>Mark put his hands over his face.<\/p>\n<p>Diane stared at nothing.<\/p>\n<p>The detective added one more thing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCrowe also says Vale didn\u2019t design the Sophie asset plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says Vale approved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho designed it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective glanced toward Diane.<\/p>\n<p>She looked confused.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said the name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJonathan Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every person in the room stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer who warned Mark.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer who removed the clause.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer who tried to withdraw.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer who had apparently built the structure in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of his missing car.<\/p>\n<p>His files.<\/p>\n<p>Morrow saying he had moved him somewhere safe.<\/p>\n<p>The picture shifted again.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer had not merely been a bridge.<\/p>\n<p>He had been an architect who eventually regretted the building.<\/p>\n<p>And somewhere out there, alive and hidden, he knew exactly how the entire plan was supposed to end.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=29539\">Click here to continue reading: PART 17: Mercer\u2019s Confession Explained How My Assets Were Chosen, but One Missing Signature Pointed Back to Someone We Had Trusted Completely<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I remembered the night I met Mark in ridiculous detail.
