Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou met him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe called me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo warn me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was unexpected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Vale had become unpredictable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said my mother had made promises she couldn\u2019t keep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat promises?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wouldn\u2019t say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he mention the condo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat if I wanted to protect you, I needed to make sure no papers were signed after the ceremony.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my parents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Mercer warned you about the papers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you still didn\u2019t tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought I could stop it without destroying the wedding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My anger returned instantly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou keep saying that as though the wedding itself was sacred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd my informed consent wasn\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mercer tell you who prepared the forged document?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ask?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s obviously a lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suspected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mercer seem afraid?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That mattered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf Vale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assumed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould it have been someone else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>The detective had been taking notes.<\/p>\n<p>My mother said, \u201cIf Mercer warned Mark, maybe he wasn\u2019t fully aligned anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t make him innocent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t say it did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma looked at the schedule again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe may have been trying to protect himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I agreed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWarn Mark just enough that if everything collapsed, Mercer could say he tried to stop it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s plausible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father looked at the final calendar entry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPost-ceremony execution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat time did Diane make her announcement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout seven-ten.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Mercer expected paperwork twenty-five minutes earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered leaving the head table briefly before dinner.<\/p>\n<p>A coordinator had told me someone needed me near the bridal suite.<\/p>\n<p>When I got there, nobody was waiting.<\/p>\n<p>I had assumed it was confusion.<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt six forty-five, I was sent to the bridal suite.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWedding staff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho specifically?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t remember her name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event planner was contacted.<\/p>\n<p>She pulled staff logs.<\/p>\n<p>The woman who had approached me was not actually on the venue staff.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody by her description had been assigned to me.<\/p>\n<p>A stranger had directed me toward a private room at exactly the time Mercer\u2019s calendar said post-ceremony execution.<\/p>\n<p>My father\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t anything happen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel had intercepted me in the hall.<\/p>\n<p>She dragged me back toward the ballroom because the photographer wanted sunset pictures.<\/p>\n<p>I never reached the suite.<\/p>\n<p>A meaningless interruption had changed the plan.<\/p>\n<p>Or postponed it.<\/p>\n<p>The detective\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>He listened.<\/p>\n<p>Then stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMercer\u2019s office called emergency services twenty minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn apparent break-in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Mercer there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis office was searched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobbed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFiles were opened.
