The fabric was streaked gray where the hem had dragged through the gravel outside. One of the lace sleeves had torn near my wrist. too.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the surveillance photographs on the desk.<\/p>\n<p>Until then, every piece of evidence had pushed me toward one conclusion: Mark had helped design the plan.<\/p>\n<p>But if someone was monitoring his movements as carefully as mine, there was another possibility.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Mark was involved.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he had begun inside the plan and lost control of it.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe someone wanted to know exactly what he was doing because they did not trust him either.<\/p>\n<p>I hated that uncertainty more than certainty itself.<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>A new message appeared.<\/p>\n<p>MARK DOESN\u2019T KNOW EVERYTHING.<\/p>\n<p>I showed the detective.<\/p>\n<p>Before he could take the phone, another message arrived.<\/p>\n<p>BUT HE KNOWS ENOUGH.<\/p>\n<p>Then a third.<\/p>\n<p>ASK HIM WHAT HAPPENED ON AUGUST 14.<\/p>\n<p>The date punched through me.<\/p>\n<p>August 14.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>That was the night Mark had arrived at my apartment after midnight with blood on his shirt.<\/p>\n<p>He told me he had cut his hand changing a
