A cheerful song began, horribly inappropriate to what was happening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You hinted. You asked questions. You criticized how fast the wedding was moving. You made me transfer my condo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never said twelve million dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know the number then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew enough to protect the property. I didn\u2019t know enough to accuse Mark of marrying you for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>The question I had been avoiding was suddenly between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you think he did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother\u2019s eyes filled with pain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you deserve to ask him with all the facts in front of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That wasn\u2019t an answer.<\/p>\n<p>It was worse.<\/p>\n<p>I walked back to the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they needed money, why didn\u2019t Mark ask me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould you have given him millions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould you have mortgaged your condo to cover his family\u2019s debts?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould you have combined your investments with a family business carrying liabilities you didn\u2019t understand?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen perhaps asking directly wasn\u2019t useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat down again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat were they planning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She opened another section of the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know the entire plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you know something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She removed a document.<\/p>\n<p>My name appeared near the top.<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s was beneath it.<\/p>\n<p>I skimmed the first page.<\/p>\n<p>It appeared to be a marital property agreement.<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never seen this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw the signature.<\/p>\n<p>Mine.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, my mind refused to process it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI signed something like this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut that\u2019s my signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Sophie. It looks like your signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>The shape was excellent.<\/p>\n<p>The slant was right.<\/p>\n<p>The first name could have fooled me.<\/p>\n<p>Then I noticed the ending of Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>The final stroke was too deliberate.<\/p>\n<p>I always rushed it.<\/p>\n<p>Whoever had created this had copied the appearance of my handwriting without understanding how my hand actually moved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t sign this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone forged my name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father hired a forensic document examiner two weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked up sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they find?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe signature was simulated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words seemed to make the air heavier.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does this agreement do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt creates a path for property you brought into the marriage to be treated differently under certain conditions. Combined with later transfers, refinancing, and joint ownership documents, it could have been used to support claims that you intended to merge assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho had this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s one of the things we\u2019re still tracing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Diane know about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother didn\u2019t answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Diane\u2019s certainty downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>There were documents.<\/p>\n<p>That was what she had said.<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe she does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Mark?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The door opened.<\/p>\n<p>Mark stood there.<\/p>\n<p>His tie hung loose. His hair, perfect an hour earlier, had fallen across his forehead.<\/p>\n<p>He looked exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>For half a second, I wanted him to walk across the room and make all of it ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted my mother to be wrong.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted Mark to laugh at the document, call the police himself, demand to know who had forged my signature.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, his eyes landed on the paper.<\/p>\n<p>And fear crossed his face.<\/p>\n<p>I knew before he spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnow what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held up the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what that is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou looked at it like you recognized it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m looking at a piece of paper from your mother\u2019s folder of accusations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know someone forged my signature?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother remained seated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen perhaps you can explain Richard Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not doing this with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo it with me,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is Richard Vale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lender.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me you didn\u2019t know him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI panicked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause your mother ambushed us at our wedding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother didn\u2019t announce she owned my condo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He rubbed both hands over his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is spiraling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwelve million dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His hands stopped.<\/p>\n<p>There it was again.<\/p>\n<p>That tiny involuntary pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much of it is yours?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t that simple.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of the obligations belong to the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour family\u2019s company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company where you have signing authority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned toward my mother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve been investigating me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She didn\u2019t flinch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had no right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe had more right than you had to hide twelve million dollars before marrying me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked back at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was going to tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the wedding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>The sound didn\u2019t resemble me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter I was legally married to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t want finances destroying this before we even had a chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou mean you didn\u2019t want me making an informed decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas the forged agreement your idea?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother\u2019s?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother handled some paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew she was trying to reorganize things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThings?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamily assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy condo is not a family asset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked away.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know she wanted me to put you on the deed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer came quietly.<\/p>\n<p>My mother closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at my husband.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you never told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought we\u2019d discuss it after the honeymoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause married people make decisions together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were engaged for eleven months. You had eleven months to discuss it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He reached toward me.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>His hand fell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the forged signature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know this existed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I raised my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>He looked away.<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew there were drafts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith my forged signature?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know she had done that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He froze.<\/p>\n<p>The pronoun had escaped before he could stop it.<\/p>\n<p>My voice became very quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophie\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew she was preparing documents involving my property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew she was exploring options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you let me marry you without telling me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Something inside me became unexpectedly calm.<\/p>\n<p>I walked past him.<\/p>\n<p>He caught my wrist.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled free immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t touch me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He released me.<\/p>\n<p>My mother stood.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the door.<\/p>\n<p>The reception went quiet again when I entered the ballroom.<\/p>\n<p>I found my father near the head table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He came to me immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No questions.<\/p>\n<p>He took off his jacket and put it over my shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>Mark came out behind us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophie, wait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I kept walking.<\/p>\n<p>Then Diane\u2019s voice cut across the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot walk away from your husband on your wedding night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Slowly, I turned.<\/p>\n<p>She stood beneath the chandeliers in her gold dress, furious rather than ashamed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are his wife now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression softened slightly, apparently mistaking the word for surrender.<\/p>\n<p>Then I finished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m your son\u2019s wife.
