can\u2019t see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou recognize the date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Diane grabbed his arm.<\/p>\n<p>That was answer enough.<\/p>\n<p>I reached for the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>My mother stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anger surged through me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop protecting me from information about my own life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her hand Richard Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The name from minutes earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The one Mark claimed not to know.<\/p>\n<p>I turned the photograph toward my husband.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you didn\u2019t know him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>Then at my mother.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became very quiet.<\/p>\n<p>My mother closed the folder.<\/p>\n<p>Diane\u2019s face had lost all color.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the photograph again, at my husband standing beside the man he had denied knowing, and understood something that made the
