Pre-sales weren\u2019t materializing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Richard Ross know you warned her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThreatened to complain to my employer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything happen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about Garrett?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI met him once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My grip tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter Ridgefield failed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBank lobby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Travis hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me people like me enjoyed destroying families from behind desks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was years before he dated Courtney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you recognize him when Courtney introduced him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImmediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said I was being insane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you tell Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said Garrett wasn\u2019t responsible for his father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A reasonable statement by itself.<\/p>\n<p>But not in this context.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened after?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started asking questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout Garrett?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s when Courtney said you were monitoring her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sounded tired.<\/p>\n<p>Not vindicated.<\/p>\n<p>Just tired.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the old screenshots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the divorce conflict wasn\u2019t only about the affair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou thought Garrett might be targeting the family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know what I thought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you have proof?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Courtney used that uncertainty to call you controlling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes I was controlling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said it before I could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI checked her phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI questioned her constantly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI gave her reasons to feel watched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The nuance mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Travis could have behaved badly without being wrong about everything.<\/p>\n<p>Courtney could have felt controlled while also concealing a relationship.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing required a single villain in every scene.<\/p>\n<p>Except perhaps the financial records.<\/p>\n<p>Those were becoming less ambiguous.<\/p>\n<p>I called David.<\/p>\n<p>He had already received Travis\u2019s screenshots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis changes motive,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPotentially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGarrett knew Travis years before Courtney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis father lost Mom\u2019s money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTravis warned her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Garrett later becomes involved with Courtney and builds a property structure using our family\u2019s remaining assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat can\u2019t be coincidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can be suspicious without being proven intentional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hated him for half a second.<\/p>\n<p>Then appreciated him again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would prove it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCommunications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Richard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they exist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard is dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis records may not be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Dad\u2019s boxes.<\/p>\n<p>People kept more than they realized.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat should I search?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything with Richard Ross, Ridgefield, Garrett, Elaine, Paul, Dalton.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I went back through Dad\u2019s folder.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom was a printed email I had overlooked.<\/p>\n<p>Not between Dad and Richard.<\/p>\n<p>Between Dad and Travis.<\/p>\n<p>Date: eight months before Dad died.<\/p>\n<p>Travis had forwarded Dad a short internal public-record summary of Ridgefield.<\/p>\n<p>His note:<\/p>\n<p>Paul\u2014since Elaine mentioned Richard\u2019s pitch at dinner, I pulled what I could from public filings. Please be careful. Several Ross entities share debt and management fees. I would not put family money into this without independent review.<\/p>\n<p>Dad replied:<\/p>\n<p>Agreed. Already told Elaine no.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the words.<\/p>\n<p>Already told Elaine no.<\/p>\n<p>Mom knew Dad opposed Ridgefield while he was alive.<\/p>\n<p>After he died, she did exactly what he had warned against.<\/p>\n<p>I turned the page.<\/p>\n<p>Another note in Dad\u2019s handwriting:<\/p>\n<p>If anything happens to me, tell Mary where the insurance folder is.
