Because every single thing is not fraud just because you don\u2019t like how paperwork looks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David remained calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen produce the submissions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the audit logs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the beneficiary histories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd all versions of the trust instrument.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At that, Garrett looked toward Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Very quickly.<\/p>\n<p>But I caught it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo there were multiple versions,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew\u2019s eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many times was the trust changed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Courtney looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original. Then an amendment after Hanover. Then another last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho changed it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrustees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou and me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Courtney\u2019s face went blank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI signed one amendment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI signed one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garrett spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou signed both.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Courtney turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShow me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrew flipped through his file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have copies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pulled two documents.<\/p>\n<p>Courtney took them.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes moved down the pages.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>The first signature she recognized.<\/p>\n<p>The second she stared at for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garrett exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCourtney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not my signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s electronic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the date.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was in Cancun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garrett said, \u201cYou can sign from Cancun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy phone was stolen in Cancun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>I felt the room tighten.<\/p>\n<p>Courtney looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou spent half that trip helping me replace everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garrett\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>Only slightly.<\/p>\n<p>But enough.<\/p>\n<p>Courtney\u2019s voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou signed for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why is my name here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrew was already reading the signature certificate.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis document was routed through an email address.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Courtney leaned over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat address?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He read it.<\/p>\n<p>courtney.dalton.admin@outlook.com.<\/p>\n<p>Courtney looked at Garrett.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have that email.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pattern repeated itself so cleanly that for a moment it seemed unreal.<\/p>\n<p>A fake email for me.<\/p>\n<p>A fake email for Courtney.<\/p>\n<p>Administrative convenience.<\/p>\n<p>That was the phrase.<\/p>\n<p>Garrett stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m done with this circus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David said, \u201cSit down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garrett laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t represent me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. But your lawyer may want you to hear what comes next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrew was staring at him.<\/p>\n<p>Not protecting him now.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluating him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat comes next?\u201d Garrett asked.<\/p>\n<p>David looked at me first, then Courtney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo individuals appear to have electronic signatures on trust documents routed through email accounts they say they never controlled. One of those documents expands borrowing authority.
