looked genuinely confused.<\/p>\n<p>David said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I watched Garrett.<\/p>\n<p>His face had lost some color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no Guarantor Two,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Courtney laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw the folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou saw a folder name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn your laptop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a template.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose documents were in it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone of your business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer changed everything.<\/p>\n<p>David spoke quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf another person\u2019s identity or credit was used without authorization, it becomes very much our business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garrett stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrew reached for his sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSit down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garrett ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked frightened now.<\/p>\n<p>Not guilty.<\/p>\n<p>Frightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGarrett,\u201d she said, \u201cwho is Guarantor Two?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He grabbed his folder.<\/p>\n<p>Courtney stood too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs it Owen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLucy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garrett looked around the room.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since I had known him, his polished expression disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>What replaced it was anger.<\/p>\n<p>Raw, impatient, almost contemptuous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou all wanted this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed at Mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wanted income.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At Courtney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wanted security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wanted to be the hero.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know there was a plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always paid. What difference does it make what account it went into?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The philosophy beneath everything.<\/p>\n<p>If I could afford the loss, consent did not matter.<\/p>\n<p>If the money built something useful, deception did not matter.<\/p>\n<p>If they benefited, my ignorance was convenient.<\/p>\n<p>Garrett turned toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>David said, \u201cLeaving doesn\u2019t stop the document requests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He opened the door.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mom said something that stopped him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell them about Paul.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garrett froze.<\/p>\n<p>Courtney looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is Paul?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom was crying harder now.<\/p>\n<p>Garrett slowly turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElaine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said it would never touch him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart began pounding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is Paul?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Her face collapsed in a way I had never seen before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father is dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He had died seven years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Heart attack.<\/p>\n<p>Fifty-eight.<\/p>\n<p>No debt that I knew of beyond ordinary bills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does Dad have to do with this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom pressed both palms to the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original money wasn\u2019t mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not understand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat original money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe money I said I invested.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became silent.<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked at Courtney.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen your father died, there was another account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA life-insurance policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>I knew about Dad\u2019s policy.<\/p>\n<p>Mom had received it.<\/p>\n<p>Or I thought she had.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were two policies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne went to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the other?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo you and Courtney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo hundred thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne hundred thousand each?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could hear the air conditioning.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never received it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kept it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Courtney whispered, \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even she had not known.<\/p>\n<p>Mom continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father was worried you girls were too young.
