Need a favor.<\/p>\n<p>I read the exchange twice.<\/p>\n<p>There was no misunderstanding. No forgotten agreement. No vague promise she could twist later into consent.<\/p>\n<p>She had known.<\/p>\n<p>I saved every message.<\/p>\n<p>Then I forwarded them to my personal email.<\/p>\n<p>Owen appeared at the edge of the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you mad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I put my phone down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot at you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He studied my face with the wary concentration children develop when adults around them are unpredictable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom said you like watching us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was true, and somehow that made everything worse.<\/p>\n<p>I loved them. Courtney knew I loved them. She had turned that love into leverage.<\/p>\n<p>Lucy came in behind him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre we still going somewhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pulled out a chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome sit with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She climbed onto it, the plastic cruise bracelet still circling her wrist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mom had to change the plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her mouth trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I got sick last time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Owen was bad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Owen immediately protested. \u201cI wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has nothing to do with either of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lucy looked unconvinced.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to say more, but I did not know what Courtney had promised them or what explanation she intended to invent later.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Mom.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Courtney reach the port?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<p>No hello.<\/p>\n<p>No question about why two children had unexpectedly appeared at my house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnew what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat she was bringing Owen and Lucy here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe mentioned you might help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn&#39;t ask me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMary, she\u2019s been under tremendous stress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>There it was again.<\/p>\n<p>Courtney\u2019s stress, treated like a natural disaster the rest of us were expected to prepare for.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a flight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can get another one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom went silent.<\/p>\n<p>I had said no to Courtney plenty of times before, but usually it was a temporary no followed by negotiation, guilt, and eventual surrender.<\/p>\n<p>This one sounded different even to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMary,\u201d Mom said carefully, \u201cfamily has to come before work sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes that apply to Courtney?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that supposed to mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe left her children on my porch to go on a cruise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe planned this trip months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI planned this interview months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t have children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words landed exactly where she intended.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Owen and Lucy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you have more flexibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy life is not empty space around Courtney\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t be dramatic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost answered, but something stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>I had spent years arguing inside the rules my family created. Courtney needed more because she had children. Mom deserved patience because she was trying to keep everyone together. I was the stable one, therefore stability was apparently something other people were entitled to consume.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need Travis\u2019s number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe children need a parent. Courtney left. I\u2019m calling their father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The speed of her answer startled me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCourtney does not want him involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is their father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know what he put her through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Owen.<\/p>\n<p>He was listening.<\/p>\n<p>I walked into the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly did he do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom sounded offended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m asking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe abandoned her emotionally. He made everything difficult. He fought about money. He threatened custody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those were phrases I had heard before.<\/p>\n<p>But suddenly they sounded strangely imprecise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he do to the kids?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t the point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is exactly the point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCourtney will never forgive you if you call him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I glanced at the clock.<\/p>\n<p>7:39.<\/p>\n<p>My rideshare was coming in twenty-six minutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSend me his number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds I stood in the hallway listening to my refrigerator hum.<\/p>\n<p>Then Owen spoke behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know Dad\u2019s number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>He held up his tablet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom said I\u2019m only supposed to call him when she says.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence made something in me tighten.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he makes problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again, the same language.<\/p>\n<p>Not specific actions. Labels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want to call your dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His answer came immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I crouched beside him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen call him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Owen opened his contacts.<\/p>\n<p>The name DAD had a photograph beside it: Travis crouching between Owen and Lucy beside a lake. All three were smiling.<\/p>\n<p>Owen pressed the button.<\/p>\n<p>Travis answered on the second ring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHey, buddy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice changed when he saw Owen\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe went on the cruise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAunt Mary\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Travis said nothing for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then his voice became very calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut Aunt Mary on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Owen handed me the tablet.<\/p>\n<p>I had not spoken directly to Travis in almost three years.<\/p>\n<p>He looked older than I remembered. More gray near his temples. Work shirt. Truck interior behind him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMary?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre the kids okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s Courtney?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently heading to the cruise terminal with Garrett.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression went blank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe left them with you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you agree to that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something changed in his face.<\/p>\n<p>Not surprise exactly.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat time did she leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout twenty minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd when did she ask you to watch them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen she arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He rubbed a hand over his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words bothered me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You clearly meant something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He glanced away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMary, I can be there in forty minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the clock.<\/p>\n<p>My rideshare.<\/p>\n<p>My flight.<\/p>\n<p>The children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll take them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re my kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer was so simple that I felt embarrassed by the question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCourtney told us you weren\u2019t allowed unsupervised time with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Travis slowly looked back at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told you that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A humorless smile appeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat explains a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll explain when I get there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call ended.<\/p>\n<p>I canceled the rideshare and booked another for 8:40.<\/p>\n<p>If Travis arrived when he said he would, I could still make the airport.<\/p>\n<p>Barely.<\/p>\n<p>At 8:11, Courtney called.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d she demanded.<\/p>\n<p>No greeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI called the children\u2019s father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had no right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the living room, where Lucy was coloring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know the custody situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cActually, I\u2019m beginning to think I don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Courtney lowered her voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not let Travis take them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I said so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t a reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s unreliable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe answered his son\u2019s call in two rings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I know you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>The words surprised both of us.<\/p>\n<p>Courtney recovered first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cannot deal with this right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen turn around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re almost at the terminal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTurn around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Travis gets the kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you give them to him, I swear\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you going to do, Courtney?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice became softer.<\/p>\n<p>That was always more effective than shouting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMary, please. I need you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my suitcase.<\/p>\n<p>Six years of work sat inside it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You need me to surrender.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither was leaving your children at my door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>At 8:27, a dark pickup stopped in front of my house.<\/p>\n<p>Travis got out.<\/p>\n<p>Owen ran before I could say anything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Travis caught him against his chest.<\/p>\n<p>Lucy followed.<\/p>\n<p>He bent and lifted her.<\/p>\n<p>She wrapped both arms around his neck.<\/p>\n<p>I stood on the porch watching them.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing about the scene matched the man I had been warned about for four years.<\/p>\n<p>Then Travis looked at me over Lucy\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>His expression was exhausted rather than triumphant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t Courtney call me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I told him she had blocked me after leaving.<\/p>\n<p>He frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me the kids were staying with your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The air seemed to shift.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He lowered Lucy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe messaged me last night.
