Pounding.

Three hard knocks, a pause, then another three.

I glanced at the clock on my nightstand and felt irritation rise immediately. My rideshare was scheduled for 8:05. My flight to Dallas left at eleven. By three that afternoon, I was supposed to be sitting across from two regional executives discussing the promotion I had spent nearly six years working toward.

Nobody who knew me would have chosen that morning to drop by unexpectedly.

I shoved my other foot into its shoe and hurried downstairs. My suitcase waited beside the entryway, zipped, tagged, and packed with the charcoal suit I had bought specifically for the interview.

The pounding came again.

“Coming.”

When I opened the door, my sister Courtney was standing there with Owen and Lucy.

For one confused second, I thought I had forgotten something. A school closure. A doctor’s appointment. Some family arrangement buried under weeks of preparation.

Then I noticed the luggage.

Owen, eight, had a blue backpack hanging from one shoulder. Lucy, five, wore a pink one with a stuffed rabbit clipped to the zipper. Beside Courtney sat two small overnight bags.

Courtney herself was dressed for travel.

White linen pants. Sandals. Oversized sunglasses pushed onto her head. A rolling suitcase stood behind her, and a straw sunhat had been looped around its handle.

My stomach tightened.

“What are you doing here?”

Courtney stepped past me before answering.

“Thank God you’re awake.”

Owen followed her cautiously. Lucy came in last, dragging her backpack against the doorframe.

I stayed by the open door.

“Courtney.”

She was already looking around my living room as though checking whether the children had everything they needed.

“Snacks are in Owen’s bag.
