no.<\/p>\n<p>Which meant I needed to understand why.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he claim he knows?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike checked the note.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says Anna Bennett lied to you about one thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat thing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike read Gerald\u2019s message exactly.<\/p>\n<p>Ask Chloe whether her mother ever told her who paid for her childhood home.<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>My father had bought that house before I was born.<\/p>\n<p>Or I had always thought he did.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald\u2019s message continued.<\/p>\n<p>The first Marlow money never disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Anna kept part of it.<\/p>\n<p>And if that was true, Gerald was about to argue that my own family had benefited from the same corrupted system we were accusing
