She just doesn\u2019t know it matters.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>A memory moved at the edge of thought.<\/p>\n<p>My mother\u2019s kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Recipe cards.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs.<\/p>\n<p>A green metal tin.<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>A recipe tin was too small.<\/p>\n<p>The attic.<\/p>\n<p>My father\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p>Boxes.<\/p>\n<p>A cedar chest.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>The dollhouse.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had built me a wooden dollhouse when I was eight.<\/p>\n<p>Large.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy.<\/p>\n<p>With tiny wallpaper and working cabinet doors.<\/p>\n<p>After she died, my father stored it in the attic because I could not bear to throw it away.<\/p>\n<p>One room had a floor panel that never sat flat.<\/p>\n<p>I had complained about it as a child.<\/p>\n<p>My mother always told me not to pry at it.<\/p>\n<p>My pulse accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad still has my dollhouse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother built it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned to Pike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a false floor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>He answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad, go to the attic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dollhouse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He knew.<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother made me promise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo get it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA man came yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every muscle in my body tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat man?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaid he was from the bank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike took the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you let him inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked about old inherited property. I told him to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDescription?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father gave one.<\/p>\n<p>Mid-fifties.<\/p>\n<p>Dark coat.<\/p>\n<p>Gray hair.<\/p>\n<p>Scar near chin.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>Before his arrest, he had gone to my father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he come inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you check the attic afterward?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father\u2019s voice shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dollhouse had been moved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs the floor compartment still there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI opened it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The green box was gone.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel had found it first.<\/p>\n<p>Except Samuel had been arrested afterward.<\/p>\n<p>Pike turned toward an officer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSearch his property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s belongings had already been inventoried.<\/p>\n<p>No green box.<\/p>\n<p>No photographs.<\/p>\n<p>No letters.<\/p>\n<p>Which meant he had passed it to someone before attacking the safe apartment.<\/p>\n<p>Lucas?<\/p>\n<p>Gerald?<\/p>\n<p>Another courier?<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked toward the servers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCheck location history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike\u2019s team searched Northbridge tracking data.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s phone had pinged near my father\u2019s neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>Then thirty minutes later near a private airfield.<\/p>\n<p>Then near the safe apartment.<\/p>\n<p>Pike asked, \u201cWho was at the airfield?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard searched access logs.<\/p>\n<p>One registered vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Lucas Harrow.<\/p>\n<p>But another camera captured a passenger.<\/p>\n<p>A woman.<\/p>\n<p>Marianne.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cShe said she was helping us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maybe she was.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe she had been carrying evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe she was still moving pieces for Gerald.<\/p>\n<p>Pike called the station.<\/p>\n<p>Marianne was still in custody.<\/p>\n<p>He ordered another interview.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving the cabin, one forensic technician called Christopher over.<\/p>\n<p>They had found an encrypted message thread between Richard Vale\u2019s company and an unknown Northbridge administrator.<\/p>\n<p>User initials:<\/p>\n<p>M.C.<\/p>\n<p>Marianne Cole.<\/p>\n<p>Christopher opened the final message.<\/p>\n<p>Timestamp: after Gerald\u2019s arrest.<\/p>\n<p>M.C.: I have the green box.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown: Keep it away from G.<\/p>\n<p>M.C.: He\u2019ll know.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown: Let him.<\/p>\n<p>M.C.: Where do I bring it?<\/p>\n<p>Unknown: Same place Eleanor should have gone.<\/p>\n<p>Pike stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat place?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked at the message.<\/p>\n<p>Then toward the reservoir.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFederal building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words did not fit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor was trying to reach federal investigators the night she crashed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not local police.<\/p>\n<p>Not the officer who betrayed her.<\/p>\n<p>Federal investigators.<\/p>\n<p>Marianne had taken my mother\u2019s green box.<\/p>\n<p>And instead of giving it to Gerald, she had apparently been trying to finish the journey Eleanor never completed.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=29404\">Click here to continue reading: PART 24: Marianne Delivered My Mother\u2019s Green Box to Federal Investigators, but One Photograph Inside Forced Gabriel to Confront Eleanor\u2019s Last Secret<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Police reached the cabin before we did.
