told.<\/p>\n<p>MARIANNE: Gerald agrees.<\/p>\n<p>LUCAS: Witnesses?<\/p>\n<p>MARIANNE: Evelyn if needed.<\/p>\n<p>LUCAS: She won\u2019t lie again.<\/p>\n<p>MARIANNE: Gerald thinks she will.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn had been right.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald intended to use her history against her.<\/p>\n<p>Pike immediately contacted prosecutors.<\/p>\n<p>Harrow emerged from Samuel\u2019s interview twenty minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>Two officers were waiting.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike approached.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLucas Harrow, we have a warrant to seize your devices and detain you pending questioning regarding conspiracy, evidence tampering, and related offenses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harrow smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re making a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike did not react.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel watched through the interview-room glass.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, his expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>His lawyer was no longer protection.<\/p>\n<p>He was evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Harrow was taken away.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel requested another attorney.<\/p>\n<p>Then, unexpectedly, he asked to speak to Pike first.<\/p>\n<p>Pike entered me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reservoir.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAunt Chloe\u2019s reservoir?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere exactly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn abandoned maintenance building near the old marina.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel claimed Gerald had installed a floor safe there twenty-seven years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Close to the place where Aunt Chloe drowned.<\/p>\n<p>A location Gerald had reason to visit without attracting attention because Lawson interests once leased part of the shoreline.<\/p>\n<p>Pike began assembling a search team.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel offered the combination.<\/p>\n<p>But he wanted immunity from prosecution for Aunt Chloe\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>Pike refused.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel changed the request.<\/p>\n<p>Reduced charges.<\/p>\n<p>No promise.<\/p>\n<p>Protection from Gerald\u2019s network.<\/p>\n<p>Possible.<\/p>\n<p>Then Samuel said something that ended the negotiation for the moment.<\/p>\n<p>The black notebook was not the only thing in the safe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d Pike asked.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked through the glass toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA letter from Anna.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Gerald?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she write?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never read it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did Gerald keep it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it scared him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was difficult to imagine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat could my mother possibly say that frightened Gerald?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel leaned toward the glass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told him she knew who had actually created the first Calder account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel had said Thomas started Calder.<\/p>\n<p>But my mother apparently knew something else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot Thomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike opened the interview-room door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at Gabriel.<\/p>\n<p>Then Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>Finally at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears before she tried to expose Gerald, Eleanor helped build the financial structure he later used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s expression did not change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wasn\u2019t
