Dad researched everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did he ask?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe week after he met you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So Gerald had known.<\/p>\n<p>Years before tonight.<\/p>\n<p>Years before Northbridge invoices.<\/p>\n<p>Years before he poisoned the juice.<\/p>\n<p>He had known who my mother was.<\/p>\n<p>Or at least who her family was.<\/p>\n<p>Pike\u2019s phone rang again.<\/p>\n<p>He listened, then looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found page forty-seven.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot the original.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA photograph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChristopher?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn one of the laptops from the motel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>Pike opened the image.<\/p>\n<p>The page was handwritten in Eleanor\u2019s narrow script.<\/p>\n<p>At the top:<\/p>\n<p>47 \u2014 MARLOW<\/p>\n<p>Below it:<\/p>\n<p>Chloe A. Marlow \u2014 square.<\/p>\n<p>Identity used.<\/p>\n<p>Not knowingly involved.<\/p>\n<p>Then several account numbers.<\/p>\n<p>And one sentence underlined twice.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald knows the Marlow name cannot survive scrutiny because he built Calder with it first.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the words until they blurred.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom of the page was another line.<\/p>\n<p>If Gabriel ever meets Anna Marlow\u2019s daughter, tell her the truth before Gerald learns who she is.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Gabriel.<\/p>\n<p>He looked shattered.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor had not known me.<\/p>\n<p>But she had known my mother had a daughter.<\/p>\n<p>And she had believed that someday, if our families crossed paths, Gerald would care.<\/p>\n<p>Pike enlarged the final line.<\/p>\n<p>There was one more sentence partly hidden by Mercer\u2019s thumb in the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>He sharpened it.<\/p>\n<p>The words became readable.<\/p>\n<p>Anna thinks her daughter is safer not knowing what happened to Chloe.<\/p>\n<p>My legs nearly gave way.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel caught my elbow.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cWhat happened to your great-aunt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at page forty-seven.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Gerald did.<\/p>\n<p>And suddenly the story was no longer only about what he had done to Eleanor.<\/p>\n<p>It had begun a generation earlier.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=29394\">Click here to continue reading: PART 14: My Mother Had Hidden the Marlow Connection From Me, and an Old Death Certificate Revealed Gerald\u2019s First Financial Scapegoat<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For several seconds after Gerald disconnected, nobody moved.
