Nothing about it resembled Gerald’s gleaming corporate headquarters. The carpets were worn. The brass nameplates looked older than most of the associates.

The managing partner introduced herself as Nora Bell.

She was in her seventies, with silver hair cut bluntly at her jaw.

“I remember Eleanor,” she said.

Gabriel’s expression tightened.

“Well?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“She asked better questions than most clients.”

Rachel almost smiled.

Nora led us into a records room.

“Thomas Vale was my partner for thirty-one years. He kept too much paper.”

She unlocked a cabinet.

“Sometimes that was useful.”

Inside sat several archival boxes.

One bore Eleanor Lawson’s death.”

Gabriel gave a humorless laugh.

“Mom really knew Dad.”

Nora did not respond.

She removed a sealed envelope.

“This memorandum remains privileged unless the condition is satisfied.”

Pike had sent a certified copy of Gerald’s arrest warrant and charging documents from the previous night.

Nora examined them.

Then she broke the seal.

Inside were twenty-three pages.

The first was a letter from Thomas Vale.

He wrote that Eleanor Lawson had approached him privately about possible financial misconduct, coercion, forged documents, and fears that her husband was creating false evidence to discredit her.

Gabriel’s hand tightened on the page.

The next section contained copies of signed statements.

Some were Eleanor’s.

One was Evelyn’s.

Rachel stared at her aunt’s signature.

“She really did sign it.”

“Yes,” Nora said.

“Did Thomas know it was false?”

“The file suggests he later suspected portions were misleading.”

“Did he confront Gerald?”

Nora turned another page.

“Apparently.”

Attached was Thomas Vale’s handwritten account of a meeting.

Date: two days before Eleanor’s death.

Present: Thomas Vale and Gerald Lawson.

Gabriel began reading aloud.

Gerald had denied forging Eleanor’s signatures.

He denied using Calder Holdings for improper transfers.

He denied fabricating evidence of an affair.

Then Vale wrote one sentence that stopped Gabriel.

Gerald became angry when I advised that Eleanor had preserved duplicate records.

Rachel whispered, “He knew about the copies.”

I thought of the storage unit.

Maybe that was why Gerald had been searching for them for years.

Nora turned another page.

A small digital storage card had been taped inside.

“What is that?”

“Audio.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“You knew there was a recording?”

“No.”

Nora found an adapter.

The file contained one track.

Forty-eight minutes.

Recorded the same day as Vale’s meeting with Gerald.

Pike, participating by video from the station, instructed us not to alter the original.

Nora made a working copy.

Then she pressed play.

Thomas Vale’s voice came first.

“Gerald, I want it clear that this conversation is being documented.”

Gerald answered.

“You always were theatrical.”

Gabriel closed his eyes.

His father’s voice was younger by six years but unmistakable.

Vale asked about Calder Holdings.

Gerald said it was a consulting vehicle.

Vale asked why Martin Voss was listed as principal.

Gerald replied, “Because Martin does what he’s told.”

Nobody moved.

Vale asked whether Gabriel knew his signature appeared on authorization forms.

Gerald paused.

Then said, “Gabriel signs what I put in front of him.”

My stomach tightened.

Vale’s voice sharpened.

“These aren’t his signatures.”

Gerald replied, “Careful.”

There was no confession.

No explicit admission.

But the contempt in his voice filled the room.

Vale asked about Evelyn.

Gerald said, “My sister worries too much and understands too little.”

Rachel looked toward Gabriel.

The recording continued.

Then Vale asked about Eleanor’s alleged affair.

Gerald laughed.

“You’re asking legal questions about my marriage now?”

“I’m asking whether the photographs are authentic.”

“They are photographs.”

“That wasn’t the question.”

A long pause.

Then Gerald said, “People see what they’re prepared to see.”

I felt gooseflesh rise along my arms.

Vale asked, “Did you hire Martin Voss to stage those photographs?”

Gerald answered, “I hired Martin to solve a problem.”

Rachel whispered, “Jesus.”

Gabriel remained motionless.

Vale pressed him.

“What problem?”

“My wife forgot what side she was on.”

The room seemed suddenly colder.

Vale said, “Eleanor believes you’re trying to discredit her before she can expose financial misconduct.”

Gerald’s voice hardened.

“Eleanor believes many things.”

“Did you put a phone in her car?”

“No answer.”

Vale repeated the question.

Gerald said, “You should think very carefully about where your loyalty lies.”

Thomas Vale did not raise his voice.

“My loyalty lies with the law.”

Gerald laughed.

“Then you’ve chosen a poor profession.”

The recording continued.

Vale told him Eleanor intended to take evidence to investigators.

A chair scraped.

Gerald said, “She won’t.”

Gabriel stopped breathing.

Vale asked, “What does that mean?”

Gerald did not answer.

“Gerald?”

Then came a sound like a door opening.

Gerald’s voice was farther away.

“It means my wife will remember she has children before she destroys their lives.”

The recording ended three minutes later.

No confession to violence.

No plan.

But enough to prove Eleanor’s fear had not been imaginary.

Nora sat back.

“Thomas never told me this existed.”

Pike’s voice came through the laptop.

“Is there anything else in the file?”

Nora searched.

At the bottom was another envelope.

Not sealed.

Inside was a handwritten note from Eleanor.

Gabriel opened it.

It was addressed to Thomas.

If Gerald learns I used the lake house, tell Daniel not to return there. The second box must remain separate from the first.

Rachel stared.

“Second box.”

The missing one.

Gabriel continued.

If anything happens to me before I retrieve it, the red ledger is more important than the bank records. It identifies who benefited and who only appeared to.

Evelyn.

Her name had appeared.

Maybe not because she was involved.

Maybe because Eleanor had been distinguishing between guilty people and people framed to look guilty.

I took a slow breath.

“That’s why someone stole it.”

Nora looked at me.

“The ledger?”

“Yes.”

“It tells the difference.”

Between participants and camouflage.

Between people Gerald used and people who chose to help him.

Gabriel read the final lines.

Do not trust the account ownership alone. Gerald uses other people’s names because he believes shame is stronger than evidence.

Rachel looked at me.

“That’s exactly what he tried with you.”

I nodded.

The same mechanism.

Make someone ashamed.

Make everyone else suspicious.

Then let uncertainty do the work.

Nora searched the envelope again.

“One more thing.”

She removed a small key card.

A label read:

T.V.
