She persuaded Gabriel\u2019s grandfather, shortly before his death, to separate the small house from the surrounding acreage and place it in trust.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy me?\u201d Mercer asked rhetorically. \u201cBecause Gerald didn\u2019t know I had any connection to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s there?\u201d Pike asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re the beneficiary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNominally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never went?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor told me not to unless she contacted me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd after she died?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was afraid it was bait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou let us believe she died without warning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer accepted the accusation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s voice shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou let Dad control the entire story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could have told us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each answer was worse because he refused to defend himself.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked away.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer said quietly, \u201cYour mother believed Gerald might hurt anyone who could expose him. I had a wife. Two daughters. I had noticed the same vendor name appearing on separate invoices.<\/p>\n<p>I had joked that whoever was billing them seemed to charge impressive amounts for vaguely described consulting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was the company?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel searched his memory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorthbridge Advisory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer went very still.<\/p>\n<p>Pike noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother shell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Eleanor knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to contract.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer explained that Northbridge had appeared in the final batch of records Eleanor collected. Unlike Calder Holdings, it had survived under changing ownership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGerald must have believed those records were gone,\u201d Mercer said.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Gerald accusing me of changing Gabriel.<\/p>\n<p>You stopped signing documents without arguing. You started asking about company money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe thought I was making Gabriel suspicious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if Gabriel started examining current invoices, he might connect them to old transactions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Dad wanted Chloe gone because she noticed a vendor name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only gone,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted me discredited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That distinction mattered.<\/p>\n<p>A divorce would remove me from Gabriel\u2019s immediate life.<\/p>\n<p>But a humiliating staged betrayal would do more.<\/p>\n<p>It would teach Gabriel that questioning Gerald had consequences.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wasn\u2019t only removing a problem. Other people.
